Tux Racer wont work and a few other questions

Recommended Posts

Hey

I installed Fedora Core 3, tried to play, and was REALLY laggy, so installed my video card, and now it wont load at all..I click on tux racer and nothing happens...so uninstalled it, and re-instaleld it, and still nothing...almost got everything else to work, except Java...but want tux racer more, its a cool game, played it once on mandrake...want it again lol

Also, how do I get Java to work...I went to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp and tried to install it from there, but I's assuming thats wrong since wont work...since installed it, and said it was completed...

And last question, when I boot my computer, isays something like booting Fedora Core 3 in 3 seconds, how do I change it? Want to give myself at least 5 seconds, and for windows to be the defuilt. Still use windows the most, until I can get use to linux a lil more.

Other than that, solved my other problems :) Got video card installed (assuming its installed right), and installed thunderbird, and flash.

Thanks :)

Fedora uses the GRUB bootloader by default so I'm assuming thats what you got. Edit boot/grub/menu.lst

Look for the "timeout" value. Change that to however many seconds you want.

And, if you prefer the easy/lazy way, you can run system-config-boot and use the mouse to clicky-clicky and select your default and your timeout.

Editing the file will get you more experience and confidence in maintaing your own box. Plus it will be a skill that is transferable to other distros, should you decide to try different Linux distros.

for your java j2se go here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/jre/install-linux.html

make sure you're downloading one of these 2:

SOURCE:

http://192.18.97.46/ECom/EComTicketServlet...-linux-i586.bin

RPM:

http://192.18.97.46/ECom/EComTicketServlet...ux-i586-rpm.bin

tux racer is heaily dependant on your video settings being correct. Either your video driver isn't set up corrctly, or your X config isn't correct.

last question was answered already...

Stupid question time...lol

Ok...how do I edit menu.lst...? I found it, but it wont let me edit is...says "cannot display /boot/grub/menu.lst"

And tried what mark said, under actions, run app, and says "Cannot display location 'file://system-config-boot'

Details: The specified location is invalid."

Tried to install that java, the .bin one, didn't work...I's still can't play java games

And how do I check if my video card is install wrong? I don't get any errors, nothing happens lol I click on the shortcut, and nothing at all happens...no errors, no nothing...

Not having much luck today...lol

Thanks for your help :)

I's think i's did...I's had the keys in the taskbar, by the clock. I tried to go to add/remove programs so it would ask me to enter the root password, then tried to open it, and same thing happened....is there an easier way to login as root? Tried entering the root pw in the terminal and didn't help either...lol

Did you try to run that through a browser?!?

The "file://" part is the 'protocol' part of a browser's URL, not anything that a commandline would display...

Go to the main menu and choose System Tools > Terminal

From there type tuxracer, press return, and tell us what is displayed.

markjensen-I tried to run it threw the run option under the menu in gnome, and under run command under KDE. the KDE oen didn't have the file:// part, but had everything else, and tried to use that command under the terminal, and said "bash: system-config-boot: command not found"

hornett-It says

So it is the video card drivers huh? I's sure installed the right drivers...

I have a GeForce MX400 64 meg video card, SDram, I went to nvidia.com and installed the drivers from here, http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display...2_1.0-6629.html . I's installed them, and the install said complete...Did it the way Markjensen helped me with, /sbin/init 3 and using the sh command.

Sorry if my questions are stupid lol Feel like a noob using linux...I know a bunch about computers....or so I thought lol

Thanks everyone for your help :)

If you have the 2.6.9 kernel the nVidia drivers act nuts (at least from everybody I've talked to). I know I lost all my OpenGL capabilites since I upgraded my kernel (OpenGL is required for Tux Racer and many other games). For some reason the driver installs but doesn't work proerly, go figure.

Hey everyone

well...I's tried to edit the xorg.conf and then rebooted...and got an error...can't remember what it said, but it didn't like the changes I's did..and made the changes that the readme said, I's changed the driver "nv" to driver "nvidia", restarted, and got the error...

MegaManXcalibur-I have the latest kernal, forgot to check the numbers, but the latest fc3 kernal...hope there is a way to fix it, want to play tuxracer...lol

though did edit the menu.lst and it worked :) Added a few seconds, was easier than I's thought :)

    • Ummmm that is what is it supposed to do. Just turn if off in settings if you do not want it analyzing your open tabs. Chrome does the same thing with Gemini. Sarfari will do the samething after Apple's AI and even more so with the release of their 27 versions that is now powered by Googles LLM/ML models. Understanding why it is doing it and how it can help you vs jumping to some conspiracy theroy is a much better approach. As long as it can be turned off, all is good. Yes the default should be off but the a lot of people would never discover these features.
    • Just another reason (aside from many others) not to use Edge. Firefox 153.0b5 DEx64 has a similar feature added recently in prior builds that I will turn off at some point when I get around to it. It's the new "Something looks suspicious" page that pops up here and there. It cleverly hides itself between web pages that I've actually visited; as a result, you know, of selecting a web page and telling the browser where to go. The interesting thing is that it does not produce these warnings from pages that I, as the only intelligent user of the browser in my system, have ever directed the browser to open! What seems to be happening is that the browser looks at all the goofy ad links on a web page I do actually open and selects one that "looks suspicious" and then creates the "something looks suspicious" web page, which is neatly inserted, as mentioned, between web pages my RB ("real brain") has directed the browser to load in a session. The thing is, I usually look at links I am considering to follow before I ask the browser to load them, and in cases I have noticed where the link does indeed look suspicious, most of the time I will choose to not follow the link at all. Doesn't everyone do this or something similar? I am picky about what I voluntarily load... (I don't like links that start off fine, with a site designaiton that seems normal enough but then is followed by indecipherable alphanumeric strings many, many lines long, etc. I tend to reject those because they look suspicious. They may not be, but I don't care... I'll stay with Firefox, of course, if for no other reason than they usually let you turn off the junk you don't like. And because it isn't Edge... But at some point Microsoft will come to realize that putting your bookmarks on the left side is a Good Thing for a lot of people, just as Microsoft discovered when it had the bright idea of nailing the Windows taskbar to the bottom of the screen, when for decades Microsoft browsers had left that placement up to the user. They have finally reversed the obscenity of that decision. Finally.
    • Google was using the old CATPCHAs data to train their LLMs. What is the say they won't use this camera data of users to train their LLM? these companies need some strict regulations!
    • Depends on what you need. Might be a bit clearer on what you plan to do with it. Sort of a waste if you get the newest and greatest, but don't know how to use it.
