CaKeY
Where's the right place if not in here? 585091481[/snapback] You had originally posted in the "General Discussion" section. It was moved here. where do i find the exe to open it? It shouldve created a menu entry in the "internet" section. You can also create a launcher on your desktop or taskbar with the launch command "gaim". markwolfe Veteran Posted December 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted December 13, 2004 Hello. I am a moderator for the Open Source area. I didn't move this thread, and I don't have a clear idea what is being asked. You want to install gaim? I think it is included on the Mandrake CDs. You should be able to add it right from there. If not, urpmi should be able to install it for you. It may even make a menu item out of it. If not, then you can use the KDE menu editor (I forget what it is called) to add whatever to your menus that you want. I have no experience with this editor, but I have heard of it. Perhaps a KDE person could tell you what this is, exactly... EDIT: The KDE menu editor is called kmenuedit  Pretty simple. :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/256571-gaim/#findComment-585092225 Share on other sites

As I think that some direct installation and startup assistance will help you understand Linux a bit more (plus make it less frustrating). Did you have your heart set on KDE, or are you willing to give Gnome a try? B) There is nothing to say that you will have any different "error experience" in Fedora. C) It isn't easier if you want to access NTFS or MP3s. Fedora doesn't include these, by default (they are easy enough to add, however). h3xis
i don't think you quite understand the concept of linux. from your recent posts that i've read you need to read...a lot. linux is not windows and i'm sure that 100% of your problems are your fault because you're expecting too much out of it. mandrake, in my opinion, is "easier" than fedora. it's aimed toward the average consumer who wants to learn linux and kde seemed to work pretty damn good in mandrake the last time i used it. chavo
I agree with h3xis. I use Mandrake and love it very much. I would say it's probably the easiest distro for a newbie. But I still like to get under the hood and hack away. In fact in Mandrake your choice of desktop shouldn't make a difference as to what apps appear in what menus. Kde and Gnome menus are merged to gether by Mandrake. I personally use a heavily updated version of gnome and use the default gnome menus. Gaim is included in Mandrake 10.1, and of course will be added to the menu in the internet section automatically. Just type 'urpmi gaim' as superuser and Mandrake will automatically install gaim for you. It will eject the CD tray and ask you to insert on of the CD's. This is so much easier than any Windows installation. Once you spend a little time and learn a couple of little tricks you'll realize how easy it is to use Mandrake. chavo
Well gaim is built for the gnome desktop. It uses the gtk library to draw widgets. Therefore it install it's menu information into the gnome menu. But like I said Mandrake merges the gnome and Kde menus anyway. Also I'm sure Mandrake 10 came with Gaim. Have you tried opening a terminal, the su'ing to root and typing 'urpmi gaim' ? Should be all you need to do. And if you take a minute to set up some urpmi sources, you can easily upgrade to the latest version. markwolfe Veteran Posted December 13, 2004 Veteran Share Posted December 13, 2004 I doubt that 100% of the problems were Fedora-based. There are many Fedora users who are very happy. (myself among them) However, I do recommend trying different distros if you find that the one you currently used isn't fitting you well. It may be Fedora. Or Slack. Or even Linspire. There is a match for nearly everyone in Open Source. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/256571-gaim/#findComment-585094720 Share on other sites
