how to reinstall ipod program

ok i just recently had a poweroutage while i was putting songs on my iod and lo and behold all the songs were gone... now i expected this but what i didnt expect is that i would forget how to install the ipod program becuase when i plug my ipod i to my mac the ipod doesnt show up in itunes so i decided that i should reinstall but since my manual is in french i dont know how to do it and i forgot how i did it last time
