Zen Micro Firmware 2.00.12

StainlessSteelRat writes "This firmware update adds "PlaysForSure" or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) functionality to your Zen Micro. As a PlaysForSure/MTP-enabled device, your Zen Micro will be recognized on Microsoft? Windows? XP systems, without having to install drivers or software. Windows Media? Player 10 will be the primary application for content management between your Zen Micro and your computer.

PlaysForSure/MTP devices enable you to:

a.. Enjoy seamless support with any computer running Windows Media Player 10 and Windows XP - no drivers or software needed

b.. Drag-and-drop songs or files to your player through Windows Explorer

c.. Use Auto Sync and Windows Media Player 10 playlist support

d.. Support future subscription-based online music services

PlaysForSure/MTP-enabled devices may:

a.. reduce the maximum number of media files because of additional memory requirements.

b.. require software updates if you want to use any currently installed applications like Creative MediaSource, Zen Media Explorer, or other track management tools with your player.

NOTE: This release does not support all types of subscription-based online music services. There will be a future firmware release where all Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 features will be supported.

This is really good news. Supporting MTP is the first step towards fighting the dominance of the iPod. Good Job Creative!:D :D

I have never seen as much anger as I've seen in teh past months between mp3 player loyalists

Now I advised my Uncle to buy his missus this for Xmas, if I upgraded the firmware would it make using the device (on XP and WMP10) easier then it might be right now?

I don't own one myself but judging from how easy it is to sync music/video using MTP on my Portable Media center I would say that it should make it a lot easier.

For people that have this device, did you have to use MediaSource to sync music before getting the new firmware?

Transfering stuff with WMP10 is a lot better than using MediaSource, especially since it has a feature that prioritizes what music gets put on your player based on your preferences, if you have more music than the player can hold.

*edit* - I attached an image of what my sync preferences look like. almost all of those were default. the preference goes from top to bottom, highest priority to lowest

hahaha

It's just healthy competition. This makes both iPods and Zens be more competative and better. We consumers will always be winners on this one!

Zen Micro RULES!

But....Apple doesn't add any of the features it lacks to the iPods........

In any case, this is a good step forward for the Zen Micro.

    • Can confirm, I've built stuff for others and no complaints using their products.
    • Yes I agree, it's annoying. You can now miss tabs unless you point low enough.
