Why not just go into finders preferences and turn off icons for the desktop? Hard Disk, etc?

Mine? I guess it doesn't help I'm running Fink and compiling stuff - that's 6 extra items on the dock. You can subtract another 4 items that are just running but not usually in the Dock.
