Hard Drive Failing - Backing Up

Recommended Posts

The hard drive is Failing in my Dual G4. There were some tell tale signs all along, but a quick look into my Disk Utility today showed that the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive itself has some nice Red letters next to it which read: Failing.

Apple is overnighting me a New hard Drive thanks to my Apple Care Protection Plan, so right now I am in a frenzy trying to back up everything.

Basically I am backing up the following, and I am asking for people to point out if I forgot anything blatantly obvious on my list to backup so I remember to back that up too.

? My Users Folder which contains my Home Folder

? My Fonts Folders (All 4 of them located in Various Libraries)

? My Music Library (was located on another partition of my drive)

? All Of My Various Work Folders For Clients

? My Microsoft User Folder (contains my Email settings, etc. I use Entourage)

And that is all I can think of right now.

EDIT - Yes it does.

What a way to start the New Year.

Thanks In Advanced if you point out anything I have missed.

Larry

Docs and photos? Settings? Maybe you should make a list of what applications you want to put back on the new HD?

Docs and Photos Taken Care Of.

As far as Apps, the list is a very long one indeed, pretty much every multimedia & graphic design application known to man. That is the one thing I am not all that happy about when it comes to formatting a new drive, it takes me several days just to get back up to speed as I always forget one App or another, so I think your suggestion is a damn good one. (Y) I am going to take a screenshot (or two) of my Apps folder, print it out, so I know what I need to reinstall again.

Anyone else with any ideas?

And it is funny, I have been using Macs now for 7+ years now, and I have always taken advantage of how easy they are to use. I am still lost in OS X because of its simplicity, as I never have to troubleshoot and know the System folders like I had to back in the days of OS 8 & 9. Go Figure.

    • WTF! Nah, not this one. If you were back then using computers in the 90s or you had a clue, you'd know this was huge and was seen and overused absolutely everywhere and you'd take this article as no more than a retrospective story. That's all it is.
    • these "editors" get paid by the amount of articles and not the quality of content; hence why we get this random stuff from the same "editor" time and time again.
    • 256 times the quality of an audio cd? I think audio cd's sound good so even twice as good as that would be something.
    • It’s not about the NOx. It’s about the electrical field.
