Mixing SDRAM and DDR RAM?

Recommended Posts

i'd check your ram. i don't believe there is even a ddr pc133.

i think you might be confusing them. there's sdr sdram and there's ddr sdram. both are sdram, but one is sdr and the other is ddr.

most boards will have one type, but boards that can use both types will only use one at a time.

Thanks for that. I'm not looking to redo the entire computer though! I just wondered if it was worth doing it or not as I had a stick spare.

you should still check your ram. you might be able to use it because i highly doubt it's ddr sdram if it's pc133. if you didn't say it was ddr, i would have said immediately that it's actually just sdr sdram.

There is no such thing as DDR PC133. DDR has more pins, so it needs an entirely different slot. Even when there were boards with both DDR and standard 168-pin SDRAM slots (in the early days of DDR) you could only use one or the other. It was more of an interim thing if you couldn't afford new memory for that shiny new system just yet.

No, I think you're confusing them. There's SDRAM (synchronous DRAM) and DDR (Double Data Rate) SDRAM. There's no SDR SDRAM, that just doesn't make sense, simply SDRAM and DDR SDRAM.

You can either use SDRAM or DDR RAM.

As stncttr908 said above, DDR133 does not exist. Only DDR200+ (PC1600) exists.

Standard DDR speeds: 200*/266/333/400

Standard SDRAM speeds: 66/100/133

DDR is faster than SDRAM.

* No longer exists or in production.

I have a question I've always wondered. I am not sure of my motherboard but I have a Sony Vaio system with a P4 1.3mhz. The ram I have is PC800 and is expensive and hard to find. I was told that is the only ram I can use, is that true? Are there any other types of memory I can use? I propably need to know my mobo huh? :|

that is RDRAM which is no longer in production( not much anyways)

look up your system specs on sony's website and double check that.

i highly doubt you can use anyother type being that the board in your rig is not supporting anyother type, sorry but you cant

sdr = single data rate.

so there's sdr sdram and ddr sdram.

SD Ram is actually SDR SDRAM, and DD Ram is actually DDR SDRAM, though the former does not usually have the SDR in front of it. The letters SDR and DDR stand for Single Data Rate and Double Data Rate, and the letters SDRAM stand for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory.

Single Data Rate DRAM is Synchronous DRAM, it's exactly the same thing!

well technically, single data rate and double data rate are both sdram (synchronous dram), but the data rates are different, which is why we put sdr and ddr in front. we tend to drop the sdr when talking about sdr sdram and call it sdram, and when we talk about ddr sdram, we simply say ddr ram.

I knew some of the older motherboard's supported SIMM's and DIMM's when DIMM's first came out, but I've never heard of mixing DIMM's and DDR's ?!?

A stick of DDR is called a DIMM
