linksys router: incoming/outgoing log question

Recommended Posts

i have an Linksys WRT54G router, and would like to know if the incoming and outgoing logs when i go on to the options website are logged locally on the computer somwhere.

id like to view these logs without needing to log onto the router.

is this possible?

thanks for the help!

You'll need WallWatcher and one of the third party firmwares like HyperWRT or Sveasoft's. These will set the router up so it will send the logs to your machine where you use WallWatcher to view them.

http://www.sonic.net/wallwatcher/

http://www.hyperdrive.be/hyperwrt/

http://www.sveasoft.com/

link logger - http://www.linklogger.com/ But it aint FREE, and you do not need other firmware to log to another machine. The default firmware can send the log info to any IP you want.

What do you not like about wallwatcher??

It just sends smtp traps - so any software that can log these could be used more than likely. What feature(s) are you looking for?

dont know what i dont like about it.

id prefer just to open up a TXT file and read it like that, than install some sort of freeware. but it seems as if you cant do that. which is weird.

ill keep lookin i suppose. any more suggestions?

thanks.

The router sends the log info out as an SNMP trap - you need some software to listen for this info and then log it to something, it could be a database, a flatfile, etc.. wallwatcher can log the data to a text file - if I remember correctly. You do NOT have to use the wallwatcher interface to look through these logs.

But your kidding right - why would you not want the ability to sort these files, etc.. You want just a plain ole flat text file to look through, hehe have fun! But wallwatcher can do this.

The reason you need a piece of software is to listen for the traps, and then do something with them - this is not a native function that Windows provides ;)
