All Live Distro Boot hang!

Hello,

I am very new to Linux, and Iwant to start my Linux world with LiveCDs. But unfortunately, they dont boot! I've configured my BIOS to boot from my CD-RW drive first, and then my hard disk. Therefore, it detects my LiveCD and boots from it. I am using Linspire Live 4.5, and when it goes to the screen where it asks me:

1. LinspireLive

2. Diagnostics

I choose LinspireLive, and it just hangs there.

This has happened to my Slackware LiveCD too!

Does anything print out? Try disabling some hardware stuff like scsi, apm, apic, etc and see if that makes it go further.

That is your problem. If you want to use a live cd distro, use either Knoppix or the new Mepis which I'm starting to like a lot. They are both debian based and VERY good. Don't mess with Linspire if you want to learn linux. They are too corporate and you don't get any real linux experience from it. It's made for corporations that just want a desktop that works for their employee's and that's about it. I would difinetly try Mepis though.

If you want a good distro to install on your box, get Ubuntu or install Mepis on your hard drive right from an icon on the desktop of the Mepis live cd. Ubuntu rules though, but Mepis is more noob friendly.

Just a suggestion - try unplugging all usb devices, see if that makes a difference. If it does, it's time to get a newer livecd :)

Try Knoppix.

http://kanotix.com/files/kanotix/ < that basically is knoppix, but includes better/more hardware detection (and is a slightly later release)

Plus, burn your cd's at a slightly lower speed, they may burn fine, but can contain minute errors that wont be immediately detected. (i'd say 24-32x tops)

If you scan around the related forums (or google) you'll usually find someone who has some sort of resolution to the problem. I found out how to get my speedtouch 330 working on the knoppix live distro through doing that. (then i found out the kanotix one autodetects it :p )

Have you tried booting using 'pci=noacpi' ?

"This disables the use of ACPI routing information during the PCI configuration stages." - often responsible for hangs during a boot.
