Another good point. And supposedly recording stuff off of TV with a VCR is illegal too, but people keep doing it.

I saw a cactus on the way to work today, I told my toilet to get a job, called my xbox a ######, I'm out of wolfnipplechips, my neopwi was stolen by shifty ninjas, and I can't find my lahrd. Am I a bad person?

Only on Sunday's my pal.

See another thing is, Microsoft should be happy we've found a way to make our own themes. They must be, otherwise we'd have been catching hell by now. Too bad they don't support it officially though. I'm sure something could be worked out. Some kind of help or wizard explaining it all so you don't break anything. Or they could have there own add on program for it so 3rd party applications aren't needed. But at least any good msstyles can go thru the wb porting. And the other way, even though it's a bit involved and time consuming, but it is possible. Even if a lot of recreating is needed, it can still be done.

what an interesting thread.

If microsoft goes after this, it will really hurt Windows XP popularity, so I don't think they will. But it would be really sad to see the themes section of this forum go away. And it would go away if we gave microsoft any bad ideas.

so we should just move on....

Exactly. I doubt they'd want to do anything stupid to risk ruining the popularity of the XP crowd. But even if we would lose it, all the good themes will still get ported to WindowBlinds. And there's still StyleXP.

Might want to actually do a little googling before you say that. US Supreme Court ruled on that back in like 1983 and said that using a vcr for personal recording was legal.

Oh no frogboy, but i saw how you went over customize.org and they went over you, and posting it at first in the blog, what was your point? really, and just look at this stuff you posted IN THAT BLOG

----------------------------------------------

"The reason WinCustomize currently does not have a .msstyles section is because of that issue: Can we condone the distribution of what is borderline pirated files?"

----------------------------------------------

And yet you port them and let ports BE on your precious website, hypocrite? Maybe we ALL (incluiding myself) should stop talking about it, and if microsoft cares let them take it. I just want to make that post because I want people to see different points of view

----------------------------------------------

That blog could also be taken by msstyle users against windowblinds program (so called trolls), saying they use scare tactics to make them use their product (free or not) so what was your point in that blog?

And if something is wrong about what I think is happening, inform me, but with facts

You need to do some reading before you say this. I would like to see the prof too. Oh so you can do stream ripping but not tv.

Hence why I said "supposedly" and not that it still is.

And than there's the whole emulator and rom business where if you don't own the actual thing you must delete within 24 hours. But does that stop anyone? No.

Point I'm trying to make is that themeing will be around for a very long time. Good or bad, right or wrong, people will continue doing whatever they want with there own free will.

.msstyles files are not illegal, but the patch is, cause your modifying copyrighted microsoft files. (But with StyleXP you get away with that, cause it does a in memory patch, and that doesnt count)

Edit: they are probably right about longhorn though, most longhorn apps are vector based (so that poses a problem for windowblinds aswell) and .msstyles are designed for 96DPI screens. And the fact the the ui is radically different, new ui elements, so wb themes will have to be written for longhorn aswell) Also, if microsoft put the themeing engine in xp, they will most likely put a version in longhorn aswell.

585235664[/snapback]

well.... I don't think it will be much more different... exept maybe that theme will be vector based instead of pixel (bitmap) based

Oh no frogboy, but i saw how you went over customize.org

i saw the whole thing as it was happening ( before they locked the thread and edited the posts to remove many of the attacks/slams by custo.org admins/users to brad as well as the insults to Deviant art and wincustomize.. not to mention the attacks on the skinners at W.C.).....

so unless you were there and saw all the posts before they were edited.. you dont have the full story ..

koopey, what do you have against wincustomize other than the fact you were banned because you were distributing warez copies of WB and IconPackager on your website? is the copy of wb you're now using a legit copy? i certainly hope so. and for your info, frogboy didn't port Inspirat or Royal Inspirat, he just posted them for somebody else. and they were ported WITH permission from the skins' authors. as for the custo.org thread, unless you read the entire thread as it was happening, you haven't a clue as to what was going on. that thread has been heavily modified from it's original state by the custo.org admins. the posts where the admnins attack frogboy, wc, da, and some skinners have been removed. they only left the parts tha tmake it look as if they, the admins, are the good guys and frogboy is the evil empire.

Koopey:

This may come as a shock to you but just because *I* don't think msstyles are illegal doesn't mean they are legal. I'm not a judge or a lawyer.

I think any reasonable person, just looking through this thread will agree that the legality of msstyles is certainly in question. I have stated *my* personal opinion which is that distributing them is NOT illegal. But there is enough of a haze over the issue that we are hesitant to put up an msstyles section on WinCustomize.com.

It is, however, interesting that someone would accuse me of somehow being responsible for the ruckus over at Customize.org given that the flame war had been going on there for 44 posts before I even knew about the thing.

Do I have Sauron like powers that my mere existence in the world somehow creates strife amongst the "free peoples"? ;)

Talk about mature intelligent answer there koopey. Way to back up yourself.

You want to know why the main audiance of wincustomize is more mature and older, is probably because they are older and more mature. And probably some of them to that kind of work for a living. The layout design of wincustomize is very professional and I would LOVE for YOU to try and do something better.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
