Looking for an MP3 player...

Recommended Posts

Ive seen many topics and posts here on there being players better than the ipod, ones that look better and have more features and better battery life and that have a better interface. The downside to this is I have not really seen the name of any player attached to any of these posts.

Im looking for something that has 20gb or storage.

Something thats under $200 (on ebay or newegg).

Thats it, I want it to look cool of course, battery life is not that big a deal for me, im just going to plug it into my car.

So have at it, post pictures too so I know what "better looking than an ipod" is in your oppinion.

To my knowledge, nothing fits your criteria.

Yep. $200 for a 20GB DAP that has more features, better interface, better battery, and better looks is going to be pretty hard to find for new.

I'd recommend a used iRiver iHP-120 (seeing as you mentioned eBay) or a Creative Zen Touch, if you can afford it.

The first is a highly competent and well rounded player, the second is bulkier but with the best sound quality on the market.

Your call.

Hah. I'd love to see that as well. And better looks, i'm not seeing any that come close. For some that sony one is close.

However, for battery life. Anything.

Edit - Your from Canada, hold on

Yeah nothing for $200 CDN

No, im from California (CA). Doesn't Apple sell the 20gb iPod to students for $250. Where can I get that deal?

yea im not aware of anything that beats th looks and user interface of the iPod, but there are others out there that do have more features and much better sound and battery. im partial to the iPod cause it fits my needs and i love mine but there are better players interms of battery and sound. But if u are looking for simplicity and design, the iPod is the best out there. If u are a features person go with the iRiver if u can afford it. i dont think there is a player out there that meets your reqs though.

The interface and quality of the iPod really can't be beat. Even the mini, which I own, would be something sure to look at. Just don't condemn the iPod until you've used one.

The interface is great, I agree, but the quality is not. I found the build quality of the iPod I owned to be below average (the shell would come apart slightly; the firewire connector wasn't secured and fell off; the headphones broke; sound would sometimes cut out and only return with the next song; crackling when applying most EQ settings; limitation of volume with European models) and the sound quality was poor - I disliked it so much that I ended up selling it within a month or two. When paying ?400 for an MP3 player I expect it to work, not to be blighted by silly issues and poor sound quality.

I think the Zen Micro looks interesting, especially with 98dB SNR (the iPod's is undisclosed, but meant to be in the 80's). I may consider getting one if the price drops a bit, but I'm hardly bothered at the moment.

i had the same question/thread about 2 weeks back. was also looking for an mp3player under $200. the creative zen touch 20gb is for sale for $199 here.

but i ended up getting myself a creative muvo 2 4gb :)

where is it for sale at?

Slightly off topic but I've used iPod and iPod mini... and I've seen a number of iPods with dramatically reduced battery life cos of the crap rechargable they fit inside it.

So I bought a 1GB solid-state iRiver iFP899 and it's the best piece of consumer electronics I've ever bought. 40hrs battery time, no moving parts, MP3/WMA/ASF/OGG support, playback speed control, records radio straight to MP3 at up to 320kbps, records to MP3 from line-in socket, records to MP3 from inbuilt mic, can be flashed with UMS firmware to turn it into a USB removable drive, takes a normal AA battery and is about 1? times the size of a Clipper cigarette lighter.

It also has a pre-amp inside it that's more powerful than any MP3 player I've come across, so you can use a nice, large chunky pair of headphones without having to max out the volume.

iPod had it's day... now it's just a reassuringly expensive fashion accessory worn by overpaid ponces in London who've filled it to 11% of it's capacity and have no clue what they're carrying.

So call me a cynic. But I'm a cynic who's quite happy with 20 hours worth of tunes on his iFP and I'll be bopping my head loosely in time to my beats long after all the idiots have sent their iPods back with ?100 to get the rechargable battery replaced and are just undoing their trousers waiting for Steve Jobs to gently slide his scaly satanic pecker up their @rse.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
