Discuss: Neowin Community Game Awards

For next year, you guys need to make different categories for PC and Console so one game doesn't have a complete sweep like this year.

Actually, the single grouping is an idea I still like. Games are games. If it wasn't for HL2, Halo would have owned. A good game is a good game and a bad game is a bad game, regardless of the platform.

Half-Life 2 is a PC game. Halo 2 is an Xbox game. Therefore, Halo 2 is limited to the hardware of the Xbox and Half-Life 2 has virtually unlimited resources. I agree, Half-Life 2 is a great PC game, but you cannot compare (in my opinion) PC games to console games. Maybe when Xbox 2 is released. ;)

Technology is apart.

Gameplay wise. Storyline. Character development and a long etc. Thats what counts and HL2 was highly superior too in those departments.

Exactly, it's not all about the graphics. Half Life 2 won because it was simply a much better game. It could have used the same graphics from Halo 2, and it would have still be better.

where the hell is pro evolution soccer 4? by far the best game of the year of the sports dept much better than tony hawks underground 2.

and for graphics king i thought it would have been farcry but glad half life 2 did well this year :) i am happy on that.

the year was totaly HL2 year. it's was the waiting of all these years, the rumors, the hacking, the delays, the.. the.. the.. and of course the release that make farther impact to all.

I believe it's the only reasonable thing to see HL2 in the top.

Yes Halo2 was a great game so as GTA:SA and like SC:PT and.. and.. But the king of this year was HL2. (except the god d**n ending :x )

HL2 won because of fanboy-ism. Imo that is :)

No offence against HL2. I've played it, I've enjoyed it a lot too. But still I enjoy Halo 2 way more than HL2.

In the game industry, unlike the media, fanboyism is earned by merits.

I don't think it's all merits. Nowadays, people are very easily influenced by their environments. Like parrots in a way, repeat the other. One makes a statement, and the rest of the group follows blindly. I'm not saying all of the votes came from people repeating the other people, but still. I think it has lots to do with it.

As far as Halo 2. I agree, HL2 is superior. At first sight. The problem is that people don't give enough attention to Halo, to see the true beauty. The story, the music, the everything. But well, it still is a hard thing to reason about. I just find it too bad, that lots of people never really take the time, to actually get to know a game.

I agree with you about the enviroment affecting the individual. But thats less possible in certain aspects, like games. Why? Because players actually need to inmerse themselves into it.

True, but unfortunately. Lots of players, don't do that. I dare to bet, that a lot of people who voted, didn't even play some games longer than 5 mins. And that's a shame imo. 'Cause in that case, you get false results. But hey, you can't always have everything the way you like :p

HL2 was a correct winner. Although I still don't see why HL2 won the Audiophile's award.

The soundtrack wasnt anything to brag about. But I think the ambiental sounds and the voice acting was fenomenal, but not the best. Silent hill 4 did a superior job in that department.

True, the voice acting in HL2 was topnotch.

But the music on the Halo 2 soundtrack, would compensate for the voice acting in Halo 2. Which in my opinion, wasn't even bad. I have the soundtrack, and I still listen to it with joy. It features some of my favorite artists, and the music by Marty O'Donnell is great too. It's influenced by classical music a lot, which I really like. Some compositions even gave me goosebumps. But well, musical taste is even a harder thing to discuss about. Lol :p

Btw, I dig the Silent Hill 4 themesong :D

edit:

Two Halo2 fans talking to each other. Am I suprised ? No :p

I was hoping HL2 would not win in all the categories but it did, doesnt mean I am upset about it. Quit whining. :p

lol, I'm not upset, if you think that :p HL2 is a great game, and deserved to win some awards. But imo Halo 2 deserved something too. Even if it was, game with the most fanboys award. Just anything would've been okay

And I tend to agree with you. Halo 2 soundtrack was great.

But like you said. SH4 ost (and specially the main theme) is just... glorious.

The only reason halo 2 for some people maybe funner in multiplayer is because, Well basically it has everything Unreal 2k4 has... But less. I mean the mods for unreal well... are unreal and the game and mutators modes are great! I for one have a better time playing Cs source... yes i am one of those. But its great. Halo has the cool ability to have xbox live which is cool because almost everyone i know has an xbox and thats how we communicate. Unreal 2k4 has the weapons the vehicles and gibs<<can't deny that. So i think the problem is that if you don't have a lot of friends having fun in unreal with you, its not going to be as fun as all the buddies on xbox live that i too have. But unreal overall had more content in multiplayer as far as i am concerned, so thats its rightful place.

The only surprises for me here are, The audiophiles choice although Half life 2 had awesome sounds both in voice acting and the in game gun sounds. I thought Halo 2 just because of the sound track would've won. And the best sports game... come on ESPN NBA 2k5, Madden NFL 2005, ESPN Football 2005 Where far better games than tony hawks i have played all of them. One more surprise was burnout not winning.

But the rest of the awards HL2 got in my opinion where well deserved.

Seconded... I think you have a very good point there. The PC users on Neowin are superior to the Console gamers. And I think that's too bad :(

585300877[/snapback]

Hmmm... let me think.

Neowin. It's on the internet, which you get to through a.... what?

Oh, THAT'S RIGHT.

A computer.

Hmmm.....

    • Unofficial script lets you install unreleased Windows 11 features without Microsoft Account by Sayan Sen Microsoft has been steadily evolving the Windows Insider Program over the years, introducing new channels and testing paths that allow enthusiasts to experience upcoming and yet-to-be-released Windows features (some interesting hidden ones too) before they reach the public. However, one long-standing requirement has remained largely unchanged as users are generally expected to enroll in the Program and with a Microsoft account. That's where a third-party tool called "OfflineInsiderEnroll" can help. OfflineInsiderEnroll is said to be a lightweight script that enables access to Windows Insider Program builds on systems that are not signed in with a Microsoft account. Essentially the tool configures the necessary Insider settings locally and hence allows users to select and switch between available preview channels while continuing to receive builds through the normal Windows Update channel. If you are wondering how it manages to do so, it is made possible by a Registry value known as TestFlags. When configured to"0x20", Windows stops communicating with Microsoft's online Insider enrollment services thus preventing locally configured Insider settings from being overwritten. This allows the script to apply its own channel configuration directly through the Registry as Windows Update does not verify whether a device has been officially enrolled in the Insider Program or not. Previously the utility has had already supported the traditional Insider branches including Dev, Beta, and Release Preview. However following Microsoft’s recent restructuring of its preview channels, the script has now been updated. The latest OfflineInsiderEnroll version, 2.6.6, adds support for the newly introduced Insider channel lineup. As such, users can now choose from several Experimental channels in addition to Beta and Release Preview options. The update also retains tools for refreshing the Insider cache, resetting Insider settings, and completely stopping Insider enrollment when needed. Keep in mind though that will need elevated privileges when running the script (run as Admin). You can get the latest version of OfflineInsiderEnroll from this page on its official GitHub repo.
    • The "Classic" Outlook has done that for a few years as well. The option to even change that is really hidden away too... It really shouldn't be hard to respect user defaults. Sadly we are the product now, not Outlook. To change in the Classic Outlook: File > Options > Advanced > change "Open hyperlinks from Outlook in"

    • Vivaldi 8.0.4033.44 is out.
    • For the purpose that it was built for, it’s a great machine. It’s okay to own multiple machines, it’s okay for machines to be different. If every computer was the same, they’d be boring af.
