I was going to do linux on mine but I'm still unsure about it. Can you switch between firmwares on the unit by itself or do you need the pc?

You can switch on the iPod it self. I set my default firmware to Apples. To get to Linux I just restart (Hold Menu + Play) When the screen goes blank I hold rewind and it boots Linux :) To get back to the normal iPod firmware you just hold Menu + Play.

I don't like the word "hack" for what youre doing. Modding images isn't necessarily "hacking", neither is booting up an alternative firmware.

There is software that can mod images on the h3xx series iRivers too.

Why would you want linux on your iPod? What advantages does it have :wacko: Is it for people who run Linux on there comps? :unsure:

PlainLazy, it allows you to run code (e.g. games) on it, unlike the normal firmware.

Also, it plays OGG files.

edit to above post of mine: linux works on mac. but its not very good at doing what the iPod was designed for eg music and ease of use. any better alternatives out there?

There is experimental ipod support in Rhythmbox (Ubuntu's main music player) or you could try the more stable gtkpod.

I changed the "do not disconnect" and "okay to disconnect" icons to different ones (one with a warning, and another to a freakazoid image) and also changed the battery meter to a digital one.

for the Mac users, i found an app called alterPod (clicky). You have to register to use it, although registration is free. You will probably need to go to the alterPod help (command+?)

I changed the Do Not Disconnect button into the Biohazard sign, and changed the postition of the lightning on the battery metre.
