Hi there, as i dont have many online friends ( or friends in real life either ) i wish to discuss my mates taste in music. I am an open minded person about music and it plays a large role in my life. i also happen to create some but thats not the point.

I repsect my friends taste in music but he ( as they call them ) is a townie, ( if your in the uk you'll know what im on about if not ill explain ).. a townie is someone who has to wear Nike clothes, or Adaidas to feel that they fit in to the crowd they hang around in. This doesnt pertciuler bother me, but when this style or trend bugs me is when it influences music tastes. As ive said before i really like music - music is such a great thing but Rap artists who are just in it for the money really annoys me.

I was in HMV the other day with my mate, i asked him to point out what he liked. He walked down to the rap section and pointed out many artists an older friend i used to know liked.. Like Ice cube, eminem and many others alike which i belive are considered "cool" to like. I have endless proof that this is a trend and not because the music is good ( though im not saying all rap songs are bad, only rap artists that have explicit lyrics which are made to affend other people/artists to gain publicity to gain poplularity *cough* eminem *cough*

I am posting this because i want to hear other people's opinions and i would like to hear what you have to say, oh and note.. my friend didon't point out one album that wasnt in the populer rap artists catogry.. and right behind him was orbitals - in sides.!!

Anyway.. Cheers and enjoy this topic. and perhaps offer some advice to guide my good friend to really listen to good music ( and to which is not lead out to be cool by his drug friends )... i would just play him some foo fighters, or coldplay but he said its too mellow.. i asked him about soulfly, but he asked if it was metal and of course it is so he doesnt want that.

I can spot a poser a mile away, and back in the day i used to confront them especially if they were on my block. But thats a whole different story, tell your friend he can still enjoy his flavor of music without buying into the trend, IF he aint from the hood he shouldnt act like it PERIOD! And even if youre living in the ghetto and in a bad neighborhood and the lifestyle doesnt fit you, then be yourself, depending on the situation though :/ i know it was a different story in California, back in the days. Now its different everyone is a poser now, and claim to be hood but are really not. These guys stick out like a sore thumb. I call them the mtv crews

yeah, its just bugs me so much that these main stream artists ( well eminem being a large one ) has affended so many people in his music just to gain popularity.. i mean, affending Moby??.. Moby is 10x the artist he is.. Sure eminem can rap, but doesnt eminem get songs from dr dre or something?

Thats a whole different debate that will lead to a huge Neowin flame war here.

I wish i gotten into computers along time ago, and maybe i wouldnt've went through the **** i had been through, But i can say that it has made me a stronger person.

Seems like your friend is bothered what everyone else thinks about him and that he should be more bothered about finding things that he would personally enjoy without being influenced by other people even you as you are almost attempting to tell him to listen to ur "type" of music

quote/for one, you dont find a real townie wearing nike or adidas to be considered a townie. and i like rap music. but i dont like wiggers/

fair enough.. where i live.. every townie wants a car with a large subwoofer to only blow it out loud in the street with the windows open to be playing some rap music, and thats exactly what my mate said. i was like, What?

its not that i want him to listento my type of music at all. i was merly suggesting some artists to him that are good - no doubt about that.. but hes too wound up in the "cool" music thing to even wonder outside of it. i was amazed when he didont point one album out that wasnt rap..

but i dont like wiggers

woah, new uk slang that i Don't know?? jesus... wtf is wiggers ?

and get ur mate into good music the ... crappy way.

e.g. doesn't linkin park hav sum rap? then move 'im up to children of bodom, not toooo big a jump :)

alternatively ask him about stuff like "damn it feels good to be a gangsta" - don't know how old that is or who its by, but it sounds older, so bassically embarrass him.

He's a new kind of friend.. well ive known him for like 7 months in college, my other friends are open minded like me and dont reply "dont like that" to everything i suggest unless its rap!. Perhaps its his age?.. im not sure, but every townie down here on the island just wants to get a ford fiester or something similer, only to wack on a huge exhaust pipe on it to make it "fat".. its utterly pointless but thats coming away from the topic slightly. Anywho.. ill try and get him to listen to some other stuff.. it just bugs me this much because music is my life ya know.

edit;

also another thing i didont point out at the start of the topic is that down here, other townies alike have asked me before " what do u like" i say some artists/bands i like and they ignore me, like "where's ice cube, where's eminem".. Thats why i belive its so true. This other kid also asked my mate what he liked.. my mate replied with the norm and the kid was like "cool".. - fair enough they like the same thing and its a good thing they can both relate, but i think its more of a situation where you name the populer "cool" rap artists and they think of you higher.

First of all, if he doesn't like some kind of music, leave him to what he wants to listen to. He'll grow out of it. Just because you don't like his choice of music, doesn't mean you can go around telling him what's good and what's not.

only rap artists that have explicit lyrics which are made to affend other people/artists to gain publicity to gain poplularity

So? Every genre of music has artists with explicit lyrics. Immortal Technique talks about resurrecting your aborted fetus. I'm sure a lot of people would be offended but does that make him a bad artist? No. Is he doing it for popularity? I wouldn't say so.

Ripgut made a good point. Everyone IS trying to act ghetto. It's a trend. When this one dies out, another one will come along. It was metal in the 70s, punk in the 80s, grunge in the early 90s. Punk was a political movement. Now we have "punk" artists sporting designer labels. Every genre looses it's true sense gradually. But does it always mean that things change for the worse? I have yet to see one change for the better but it sure as hell is possible that rap could have grown out of blinging, hoes bangin gangstas and turned into a political movement. It can go both ways.

Who should have the right to say ANYTHING about trends when everyone is following one of them? You see a patch of black **** at the end of a hallway and it turns out to be a bunch of goth being anti-confirmist by dressing the way their friends are.

and i like rap music. but i dont like wiggers

I like rap music but I don't like wiggers or ######. I.E. idiots trying to act all ghetto.

To me, this looks more like you hating your friend's music than trying to get him to listen to anything different. If he doesn't like it, let him be. You're just taking him out of one group and putting into another. Don't let your friendship rot over little ****.

not sure what u mean by quote/The word "hell" under your username offends me even more.

But i was never being that seirouse negative.. Your obviousely in quite a seriouse attitude.. but im just chilled out and reading other peopl's opinions..

I dont want him to ocmpletely change his music taste or whatever - i never said thta.. But i did wanrt him.. and people lke him to realise that there really are other amazing music artists/bands out there.. who are much more talented than a few of his ones he listens to.

Also, sure some songs have explicitc lyrics that do effend people- THat wasnt my point.. i mean affend people actually directingtheir insults at them like the moby one for exmaple.. There are tons more but i havnt the time to type them up.

i dont mind bad lyrics, bad as in explicit or whatever.. but when its totally aimed at a certain individual.. then it effects me..

anyway its all good and lets carry on!

if your mate is in college, that makes him, what? 18-21 years old? he's trying to find himself, and no matter what you think, he's discovering himself. a true friend will point out if he is heading into actual trouble, but if he's digging rap and artists you don't like, that's his perogative.

if it's a phase, he will grow out of it. if he really loves rap, then you should let him love it. it's his ears.

let him find his way. if you really are open minded, you shouldn't really give a **** about what he's into. just let him know if it annoys you when he spouts out that only rap is cool.

that's my take.

ripped

If you are his friend you will respect his likes and dislikes. Let your friend like Rap, there is no problem with it. I'm sure you disagree with your friend if he thought you were listening to the "wrong" music.

And if you are so "open mined" about music you will find a reason to respect every piece of music that was ever created and wouldn't classify it as the music listened by people who cannot find themselves. Stop trying to brag about being open minded about a subject in which you seem to not be.

yeah, its just bugs me so much that these main stream artists ( well eminem being a large one ) has affended so many people in his music just to gain popularity.. i mean, affending Moby??.. Moby is 10x the artist he is.. Sure eminem can rap, but doesnt eminem get songs from dr dre or something?

I hate Eminem and Moby, but to be fair Moby said something about Eminem that he disliked so he spoke out against Moby in a song. Eminem used to make good music, but now all of his crap sucks and he seems to care more about beign a pop star. But this kid is just a poser. He must have low self esteem and feel the need to be liked and fit in. Only he can change that.

    • Edifier S3000MKII hi-fi audiophile grade bookshelf speaker is at its lowest price now by Sayan Sen Yesterday we covered a bunch of Dolby Atmos soundbar deals with several ones from Sony, as well as from JBL, Samsung, Polk Audio, and more. You can check them out in this dedicated piece. Those are not audiophile category speakers though as they are built with home theater use in mind. If you are searching for the former then Edifier has its S3000MKII at its lowest price at the moment (purchase link under the specs table down below). This is a two-way bookshelf monitor speaker designed to produce accurate sound. While it may not produce the best high-fidelity audio possible out there, it should still be significantly better than what you will get on soundbars of this price range. As such it will do justice to high-res audio played back through it. The only thing that may feel lacking is sub-bass as Edifier claims the unit can go down to 38 Hz, which should be enough for studio monitor purposes, but not for deep room-shaking rumbling bass. Where this does excel though is in its treble reproduction. With its super-tweeter, it claims to go as high as 40 kHz in the frequency spectrum, which should offer a sense of "air"yness. This is an active speaker which means it packs its own amplfication. It has a top-notch Class D amp that may be able to rival many Class AB designs too in terms of sound reproduction quality. The technical specs of the Edifier S3000MKII are given in the table below: Specification Value RMS Output Power 256W RMS (Treble: 8W × 2, Mid-Low: 120W × 2) Tweeter Driver 107mm × 107mm Planar Magnetic Tweeter Mid-Low Driver 6.5-inch (179mm) Long-Throw Aluminum Diaphragm Driver Frequency Response 38Hz – 40kHz Signal-to-Noise Ratio ≥ 85dB (A) Bluetooth Version Bluetooth 5.0 Bluetooth Codec Qualcomm® aptX™ HD Wireless Speaker Link Proprietary 5.8GHz wireless connection between speakers Supported Hi-Res Audio Hi-Res Audio Certified, up to 24-bit/192kHz Digital Processing XMOS XU216 Digital Signal Processor Audio Inputs Balanced XLR, Optical, Coaxial, USB Type-B, Line In, Bluetooth Input Sensitivity (USB) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Optical) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Coaxial) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Bluetooth) 450 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Balanced XLR) 1000 ± 50mV Input Sensitivity (Line In) 600 ± 50mV ADC Capability Up to 24-bit/192kHz DSP Capability Up to 24-bit/192kHz DIX Capability Up to 24-bit/216kHz DAC Capability Up to 32-bit/384kHz XMOS Processing Power Up to 2,000 MIPS Edifier S3000MKII Audiophile Active (Powered) Wireless Speakers: $799.99 (Sold by Edifier US, Shipped by Amazon US) If you do not have the kind of budget to spend on the S3000MKII, you can also check out the Edifier R1280Ts which is right now on sale at just $114 (its lowest price in a very long time).
