Installing SQL Server 2000 on Win2003?

I've never even installed SQL Server 2000 before, but we currently have one running somehow somewhere and there's always the possibility I might be asked to support it.

So my question is, to run SQL Server 2000, is it a standalone server O/S or does it need to be installed onto Win2000/Win2003 Server?

* Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

* Windows NT? Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 5 (SP5) or later

* Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, with SP5 or later

SQL Server 2000 is just a database application, so yes it needs to be installed on a Windows Server 2K/2K3 - there is an SQL Server 2000 Developers Edition which will install on Windows Pro 2K/XP (not sure if it works on Home Edition or not).

Just checked MSDN subscriber downloads and SQL Server 2000 Developers Edition is available At the worst, you could get a copy of the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) and use the client tools from SQL Server to use it.

I have tried to install SQL Server 2000 on Windows Home Edition,but I failed.So you know the result.

Microsoft SQL 2000 SP3 is required to Install on Windows Server 2003. I believe :unsure:

That is correct, windows prompts you to install the service pack as soon as finish installing sql 2000.

I have been using it for testing and it works well

Only SQL Server Service Pack 2 is required for supprt. But might as well have SQL Server Service Pack 3 (SP4 coming soon)

And it prompts you after you select to install SQL Server 2000 Components

theres even a MS SQL 2000 Personal Edition which runs on XP etc
