Installing SQL Server 2000 on Win2003?

Recommended Posts

I've never even installed SQL Server 2000 before, but we currently have one running somehow somewhere and there's always the possibility I might be asked to support it.

So my question is, to run SQL Server 2000, is it a standalone server O/S or does it need to be installed onto Win2000/Win2003 Server?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm..think I found my answer.

SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition can run on the following operating systems:

* Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition1

* Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition1

* Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition1

* Windows? 2000 Server

* Windows 2000 Advanced Server

* Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

* Windows NT? Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 5 (SP5) or later

* Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, with SP5 or later

SQL Server 2000 is just a database application, so yes it needs to be installed on a Windows Server 2K/2K3 - there is an SQL Server 2000 Developers Edition which will install on Windows Pro 2K/XP (not sure if it works on Home Edition or not).

Just checked MSDN subscriber downloads and SQL Server 2000 Developers Edition is available At the worst, you could get a copy of the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) and use the client tools from SQL Server to use it.

That is correct, windows prompts you to install the service pack as soon as finish installing sql 2000.

I have been using it for testing and it works well

    • Being honest, desktop Linux is perfectly fine for home users out there if the only things they do are web browsing, checking e-mail and multimedia playback. As long as you stay inside that fence, it's perfectly fine, easy and stable, no terminal required. Even easier if they pick a familiar-looking distro like Linux Mint Cinnamon, because GNOME isn't for most people.
