homlessbum
I'm running NT4.0 service pack 6a. I recently went to edit my file type association for rtf files by going into folder options under windows explorer. I removed the file type rtf (rich text format) from the list which removed all associations. I then downloaded an rtf file to my desktop and chose open with and chose winword. The file type is now associated with word, but no longer displays as a file type option in my file types list. Anyway to get this back on the list? If I try to add it manually by clicking the add button, I get an error message which reads: The extension '.rtf' is already in use by the file type "RTF_auto_file". Choose another extension. The real problem is when i try to open an rtf from a webpage. It used to open directly in my browser, now it opens word in a seperate window. Many thanks in advance for anyone's help. -Zack Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/27861-need-help-with-a-file-type-issue/ Share on other sites
KrAzY
I know or hope there is SOME reason you are still using NT 4.0, but from the action you took at first by "Open with..." should have solved your problem. The second approach should have worked, but as you say it didn't. Did you make sure there are no associations with that .rtf extension before trying to ADD? If there insn't I would blame it on ****ty NT 4.0. There is probably some solution, but those two actions you took I would have suggested. It might have to do with a registry thing, but I have no idea how you would fix it. homlessbum
Unfortunately, our company only supports NT 4.0 at this time. We'll be skipping 2000 to go to XP at some point in the future. I recreated this problem on an XP machine and could easily fix the situation. Anyways, Thanks for the response!!
