Canada not so safe?

Recommended Posts

I just received an email from my isp (Sympatico) telling me that I was providing some illigal software over the edonkey network. They told me the file, port and network I was using and told me that if i continued to make this file available they may suspend my internet.

www.bsa.org was the company that contacted my isp.

I thought that in canada we were still safe from this stuff but I guess not.

you see..sharing and downloadin are very diff in canada..you can download...but not share...but im shocked...i got bell as well..i guess i dont share that much junk for them to contact me...but again..they cant do much..so don worry.

double check ur contract and user agreement..im not sure they have anythin about piravy and terminating service.

Yup. I have gotten two emails about downloading movies off bittorrent by my ISP, and they say that they were told by "another source" of the activity and that I should stop doing it and that they, by law, can't give out my personal info without going to court.

In the USA, you would have a lawsuit on your hands already, in Canada it is safe you just get warnings and you have to be smart. You ARE ALLOWED TO DOWNLOAD, but with things like eDonkey and BitTorrent, you HAVE TO UPLOAD TOO, and that IS ILLEGAL in Canada.

That is why mIRC is a good tool, because you don't have to upload.

yeah I made a bad choice on my part.

I had to do a programming assignment for physics class and my partner wanted to use flash and I wanted to use java. I went allong with his idea of using flash.

Bad idea :(

could have asked him for it... :ninja:

....or not. :pinch: :p

Scary.

My friend works at Bell and he said that they received a call from a representative of the MPAA asking the coordinations of an ip adress so they could contact the individual who obviously shared movies thru a network which makes it easy to track down AHEM bittorrent.

So I guess he's right, some companies now do seem fedup about this problem.

It's the same in the USA, they bust you for uploading not downloading. I was busted about a year ago (thread about it here on Neowin), my isp, Cableone, told me that if I didn't comply with the letter I recieved they would cut my service. The lady also told me to just do as they say, remove the file, and sign a email like form saying I have removed said file and my service would be turned on in 24 hours. if they got another email from them my service would be turned off forever with thier Company. Then she told me that it's not what you download but what is uploading from you, so watch what you allow to be uploaded. So I now have only one folder shared, it only contains wallpaper in jpg format that isn't copyrighted.

why take without giving back? those are the kind of people that make file-sharing weak. my music uploads are somewhere 1-2 gigs every couple days and i do it without fear. first for the reason that i don't share billboard or pop music that the riaa is even looking for. thats my way of fighting back against the riaa, i don't download or buy any music by any band supported by them. the other reason why is because my isp telus just doesn't give a crap. my town has no caps on download/uploading, and there hasnt been any since dsl was put in 4 years ago.

It is very unlikely that they can do anything besides get your internet cut off. Canadian privacy law forbids MPAA/RIAA to get any information about you. So if they do decided to sue you, all the evidence they have against you becomes garbage due to them violating privacy laws.

someone can tell me how ISPs can find the filename we sharing?

isp log on the p2p network, find the user ip address and request his share list?

this is much trouble! automated tracking? spy camera in your room? :)

More and more isp's are going to cut service for things like this as it will help them stop just a few people that use the marority of bandwith downloading and uploading movies, music and software. I'm sure Cableone would increase it's overall speed if it stopped all this kind of activity. So far we don't have any caps but I've been expecting it.

    • "and pull old flight details from your email during back-and-forth conversations" The Siri I've become to know and trust. I've always wanted to pull info on old flights. /s
    • Apple unveils Siri AI, a "reimagined" version of SIri by David Uzondu Image via Apple Today, at the opening keynote of Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company announced Siri AI, a "reimagined version" of its voice assistant that runs on Apple Intelligence. Siri AI helps you do things like draft messages, edit photos, and pull old flight details from your email during back-and-forth conversations. You can access Siri AI through several methods, depending on the device. While "Hey Siri" remains active, iPhone users can also press the side button, swipe down from the Dynamic Island, or use a system-wide context menu on Mac to analyze on-screen text. Image via Apple If you ever need to go back and check previous interactions, you can open the dedicated Siri app to view your entire conversation history. This application privately syncs your data using iCloud, leveraging local Foundational Models alongside Apple's secure Private Cloud Compute servers to keep user data inaccessible to outsiders. On the iPhone, Apple built the assistant into the Camera app, bringing Visual Intelligence to help you split bills or count calories. This feature also expands to the iPad and Mac, letting users use screenshots or shortcuts to analyze images, while Apple Vision Pro users can ask questions about objects in their physical room. Other things to know about Siri AI include systemwide dictation that automatically handles punctuation and formatting, customizable voice speeds, and a spatial 3D interface built for Apple Vision Pro. Apple also added Smart Stack suggestions on the Apple Watch to help you continue recent conversations directly from your wrist. The road to Siri AI was quite bumpy for Apple, which initially promised these capabilities at WWDC 2024 when the Cupertino tech giant debuted Apple Intelligence. Apple later turned to Google, signing a $1 billion annual deal to use Gemini models instead of relying solely on its own in-house systems. However, this deal came only after consumers sued Apple because features Apple promised "did not exist at the time, do not exist now, and will not exist for two or more years." Siri AI is available for developer testing on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27.
    • Real shame the 16 GB versions are crazy more expensive than this.
    • Making me care less about LibreOffice with every tantrum they throw.
    • And within the EU all this Siri AI stuff will probably work around 2030 and the IPhone 25 🤣
