Backing up DVDs on OS X

Recommended Posts

I'm very familiar with windows xp and the programs used to backup dvds on it. On the Mac im having trouble making DVDs that look descent. On the PC i use dvd decrypter, alcohol 120% and Nero Recode to get an iso compressed at 4.35 GB so it will fit on a DVD-R. On the Mac i tried Mac the Ripper and Roxio Popcorn but the result i got wasn't to good it worked but it didn't make a good compression. Is there any other way to do this. I need the output file to be an iso on the mac because the burner i have access to is in a PC.

Doesn't your Mac have a SuperDrive? Like Max says, just use the Disk Utility, in Utilities (found in Applications). Open it up, select the DVD you've put in and then press New Image from the toolbar, it will copy the entire DVD and then you can burn it onto another DVD, using Disk Utility again. No need for 3rd party software.

Look at the programs that he is using and it's pretty easy to tell he is talking about commercial dvd's.

;)

I'm monitoring this thread with interest, quite a few apps have come up in this thread and the essential apps thread. I've gotta spread the Garden State love so that means I need software that'll essentially do what DVD Shrink does.

you'll prolly want something like dvdremaster then.

I use DVD Backup 1.3 to rip - but I haven't got around to finding time on how to burn them.

Would anybody happen to know if I can just stick these files on a DVD (assuming they fit on single side) by using the burn in the finder? Or do I have to do something special?

I tried MacTheRipper with a region 1 version of Garden State and ran into a few problems. It appeared to rip it fine both times I done it (once the whole disc, second the main feature). When I play the video TS folder in VLC the sound is mank and messed up, it just hisses and crackles; if I play it in Mplayer OS X the sound is in a different language :s The funny thing is it'll play in DVD Player absolutely fine :s is this normal?

to rip dvds i've used mactheripper and dvdbackup. both created the video_ts folder which played perfectly in vlc. i used dvd2oneX to compress the video down to fit on to a standard dvd-r. the only problem im running into is burning. i keep getting an error message that pops up saying some sort of illegal error. i don't think it's a hardware issue because i was able to burn a dvd copy using fastdvdcopy. the only problem i had with that was the menu was jacked and the video froze after 10 mins when testing it out on my home player. im thinking it had something to do with the compression process i used with that particular burn. it could be a disc issue though so ill have to test with a new spindle when i get a chance.

for those that are wondering how hard it is to use mactheripper and dvd2onex... dont' sweat it. it's all very easy to do.

The problem I have with MacTheRipper and DVDBackup is that they can't rip DVDs that aren't matched to the drives region. That's pretty bad :/

only one thing for it then really.

Yes, crack the drive!

This maintenance-focused release includes bug fixes, updated translations, and a range of safe enhancements. This release fixes a Windows security issue that could allow arbitrary file deletion during privileged cleaning (reported by Zeze with TeamT5). It also adds new cleaners (including a DNS cache cleaner, Claude Code, and Visual Studio Code forks), support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles, new deep scan options for developer directories like node_modules and venv, and safer, faster file shredding. All Platforms Added cleaners for Claude Code, DNS cache, and many Visual Studio Code forks. Added support for multiple Chrome and Edge profiles. Chrome can now clean downloaded AI models. Deep Scan can optionally remove venv, __pycache__, node_modules, and .angular directories. Deep Scan is faster by skipping directories on the keep list. File shredding is safer, faster, and leaves fewer recoverable traces. Improved handling of cookies, symlinks, Unicode filenames, external processes, and configuration files. Improved Expert Mode warnings and long warning dialogs. Fixed crashes related to cleaner detection, invalid Unicode, and malformed cleaner data. Clipboard is now cleared automatically after shredding files via paste operations. Linux Added AppImage support. Added cleaners for Visual Studio Code, Codeium, Librewolf (.deb), Transmission (Flatpak), and Profanity. Improved Linux trash detection, including Snap-installed applications and mounted drives. Fixed Wayland root CLI issues and several Snap-related problems. Improved package dependencies, AppStream metadata, and desktop file handling. Fixed startup crashes when Python Requests is unavailable. Windows Fixed a security vulnerability that could allow arbitrary file deletion when cleaning with elevated privileges. Added %WindowsSystem% variable support. Improved clipboard clearing using native Windows APIs. Improved installer experience on unsupported Windows versions. Reduced installer size and improved application robustness. Fixed Unicode handling, filename anonymization, Git revision reporting, and splash screen stability. • DriversCloud 12.1.6 by Razvan Serea With DriversCloud (formerly My-Config.com), you can explore your computer easily, safely and free. The application quickly scans your PC and identifies the hardware and software components. DriversCloud then establishes a list of the different drivers compatible with your OS and hardware. Download the drivers needed for the proper functioning of your computer. To detect your drivers, DriversCloud also displays a detailed summary of your hardware and software configuration, analyzes your BSOD, monitors in real-time your PC voltages and temperatures and lets you share your configuration online. Once the hardware components have been detected, you will be able to obtain with just a few clicks the latest drivers corresponding to the identified hardware. You can record your configuration on the site for free, and can get the corresponding URL to post the configuration to technical forums, e-mail and social networks. You can also download the detection result (the configuration) as a PDF file. To protect the user's privacy and data confidentiality, a 4-level confidentiality system was created that filters the XML marks and gives control to the user. The default level can be modified in the preferences. Using the maximum level will prevent the user from publishing his configuration and generating a corresponding PDF file. In non-connected mode, each XML configuration is stored on the server for one day (for practical reasons). However, you are given the opportunity to manually delete it. Created in 2004, and continually improved, My-Config.com has established itself on the web as a free service to PC users running Windows and Linux operating systems. The service is designed to work with the most common Internet browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).
