Ethernet printer connection with router

Recommended Posts

I have a router with 4 ports for wired connections. If I get this do I connect the printer to a wired port in the router?

Also, will this setup (if that's the way it goes) make it so I can print from my wireless laptop without the wired computer being on?

If it matters, I have a Dlink DI-524.

yes, as long as router and printer are on, you can print from wireless laptop.

What he said :p

Becareful of people getting past your router, it is possible.

you dont need to.

just connect your printer to your computer, (which is on the network, router). and simple SHARE your printer. install all the software drivers on each computer, and it works. thats how i do it in my house. my brother sometime uses my printer :p

Why would he do this when he has a router for this purpose? Basically you are telling him to change to an inferior way of sharing a printer! Doing it your way, you will need to have the computer on that shares the printer, whereas with the router no machine needs to be on, other then the one you wish to print from. What a waste of time.

Please tell us why someone would go out and specifically buy a network ready printer and then not use the network interface? Also he wanted to know if he could print from his laptop when his desktop pc was off.

Did you even bother to read the question?

This wasn't even a debatable question like "What browser should I use?" It was a straight forward question with a straight forward answer.

Yes the printer will work with that router.

Yes the laptop will be able to print to the printer without the pc being on via wireless.

The whole point in getting a printer with a network card is to network it directly to the router/switch so you dont have to use printer sharing.. printer sharing blows..

I got a HP DeskJet 5800 Series and I love the fact its wireless, it was my purpose in getting it (that and it was on sale at john lewis)

But back to the thread

You can just hook it up to the router and configure it using the CD and then create a new Standard TCP/IP port on the laptop for printing

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.1.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.1.5 changelog: Intel: Added NPU presence detection before removing shared DLL files (these were previously left to prevent potential NPU-related issues). Intel: Added optional NPU removal Improved "Extension" driver removal process. Updated several translations. • I just ordered a new MSI X870 board, hasn't even arrived yet. I checked the downloads page, and it has the firmware released on 6/11/2025 including the updated AGESA code.
    • There used to be an independent video game store in West Edmonton Mall around 20 years ago, I'm not sure when it went out of business, but they were selling console & PC games for $70±, I think it was so they could cover their rent!
    • That adverting your referring to can basically be turned off with a few Windows settings. The only advertising I've seen in the last couple of years on Windows 11 is Outlook ads because I don't have a Microsoft 365 subscription. That said, it took me only a couple days to get used to ignoring those ads. I would prefer they weren't there but it's not a big deal.
