[UK] Mac Mini, right now, but from where?

Recommended Posts

OK - I have my Mac Mini ordered from Apple, but I dont fancy having to wait another 3 weeks for it being built and shipped.

Suggestions on where to get one within a few days?

As far as I know, there are no local apple stores around here, and eBay came up with nothing except importers.

Suggestions?

Would it be possible to call up, say, a London Apple Store, ask what they have in stock, and they send it to me?

Why don't you wait? Many people are in the same situation as you and they wait. Just be patient my friend because good things come to those who wait!

Because my pockets are burning !

Im sat here infront of a god awful 17" CRT, with a hella big and loud PC at my feet - I WANT SWEET MAC GOODNESS !

Well, the delay is apparently because the MM is a custom build, whereas the standard models are ready to send 'next working day'.

So I'll be cancelling my main order and ordering via a reseller that can get me my goods next day (hopefully Wednesday if I order tomorrow).

Couple this with a stick of 1gb memory and I (should) be flying.

Speaking of which, can anyone verify that this RAM would be OK in the 1.25ghz model Mac Mini?

My only real physical upgrade to the system is going to be memory (hdd would be nice, but I can get an external firewire setup going for cheaper than a 2.5" laptop drive).

Verification from those 'in the know' would be great, or feel free to answer in this thread.

I apologise for the triple posting, but this may help someone who, like me, cant be arsed to wait around for Apple to ship their hardware.

As you can see from the posts above, I'm quite an impatient person. My original order was made at the end of January, and a fortnight later, its still going to be best part of three weeks for it to be arriving at my doorstep. So I figured I would try and get one sooner, and it's amazing what you can do with littlle effort !

First things first, go to the Apple Stores (in the UK, their sites are listed here.

I was originally told by one of the stores that Apple only had available their stock 1.25 / 1.42 systems available for immediate sale, any custom builds would be 4-5 weeks, so I endeavoured to try all of the stores to see if I could get a stock system and order the memory seperately and install it myself (you wouldnt believe the earache I got having this discussion with one of the Apple tech's, you know, I'm not sawing the arm off your first born child, just doing a little self upgrading) hence the post above this one.

So I rang round the rest of the stores this morning, and hit lucky, I only really wanted 512 memory, 40gig hdd is fine considering it's relatively slow, (I'll get a nice big external hdd at some point to run via firewire) of course being told that only the stock systems were being sold (256meg mem - eesh) I was really suprised when the young lady at Computer Warehouse could ship me out a custom build on next day delivery !

Bottom line being, I'll be the proud owner of a Mac Mini this time tomorrow

No more masseeeve PC, no more cruddy 17" CRT, just pure Mac Goodness :)

So, in conclusion, if you cant be bothered to wait, ring around the resellers, and you might just hit lucky.

Well, it arrived in under 24 hours - bargain !

Will take some pictures at the weekend probably, just picked up a temporary lcd while I wait for funds to buy a 20", OS X is definately going to take some getting used to, currently downloading updates and installing iLife 05, as well as installing apps and looking at the different themes via shapeshifter.

Definately glad I bought it, a little more playing and I should never need a Windows machine again :)

Ahh, so this is why you was selling off a load of PC gear earlier this year in Neobay then? I thought you was going to go the AMD64 route :)

you cant get bored of OSX..  :D  ... if you do wanna go for 64bit then you can always go for the G5 duals..

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
