Samba Problem

Recommended Posts

forgive me if this should be in the networking forum.

I am using a Windows Xp box to monitor 4 Samba Clients. I set samba up, set up the permissions for the folders I wish to share, Mapped the Virtual drives in windows, Logged on and everything looks good. I can access files move files around, upload, download, Etc.

After about an hour, the Samba Clients Close out and the virtual drives that I mapped error out and I get a pop up that states that I dont have permission to View this Server.

I am logged in as Root on all Linux computers when I set up the shares, and I am logged in as Admin on the windows XP box.

Linux Distro is Mandrake 10.1 using Samba - server.

Any help?

Thanks

Are you running a domain or as a workgroup? I've had issues with windows & linux fighting for master browser rights on workgroups to the point where you can't find anything without direct linking with IP addresses (which isn't that bad if you have a static network).

For instance, see if you can find your shares with \\192.168.1.100\Share_name instead of \\Comp_Name\Share_name

If so, you can let Windows be the master browser and set linux to something like 1 or 2 (so it loses the election) or tell windows to quit trying.

Hmmm... nothing is coming to me right off the top of my head. Let me ponder it and I'll get back to you. Am leaning towards some windows issue (surprise surprise), but hard to say. I've always found samba & windows needs to be setup just so for it to work correctly.
