Diskeeper or PerfectDisk

I have tried both Diskeeper and PerfectDisk and I must say they both took over 24 hours to defragmentate my 130gb partition and I never really noticed much of a speed difference.

Now however I have formatted my computer and I am looking to try either Diskeeper of PerfectDisk again. So which one do you think I should go for?

Feedback would be appreciated.

P.S. This is an independant thread from the "best defrager" as I only want feedback on the above mentioned two products. So dont be giving me stick about how this question is asked at least 10 times a week.

As I said I would I went for PerfectDisk it took 11 hours for the first defrag of my 130gb partition, and 8 hours for the next defrag.

PD never took such a long time for me. It always finish in minutes. Even on first run on 200G partition (40% used) it finished in less than an hour.

BTW defragment time depends on previous defragger and strategy used. For example Windows defrag put files in a different order than PD or DK. Running PerfectDisk or any other defragger on an already deframented disk (using different program) takes much longer.

It's only a primitive and sometimes dangerous defragger that tooks ...days to finish. Also it doesn't support MFT, SYS defragment. If you check System Mechanic's release history you'll see that users had numerous issues with their defragger.

Ive tried both Diskeeper and PerfectDisk and prefer the latter.

diskeeper is better for background defrag when you are not using your computer and is faster but Perfectdisk does a better job. my laptop runs much faster using PD and there are no background services resident in the memory unlike diskeeper where i believe in version 9 if you disable them the program itself is not working afterwards.

I've found that PD will give up CPU cycles to other programs demanding them...ie, if you have Seti@Home running in the background, PD will take forever.

I have used both, initially Diskeeper for the long run.

I had bought version 7, which I was almost happy with.

Starting with version 8 (I think), Diskeeper's slick interface was replaced by one I didn't like - which uses too much space for unnecessary info.

Then Exec software (the makers of DK) have introduced UNFAIR Home vs. Pro model, and my investment into DK7 in fact went down the toilet. I never have bought DK8, though used it for some time.

Then I came across Raxco's PerfectDisk and found it quite impressive.

It's Smart Placement allocates the files on disk by their last modification date -- which actually makes subsequent defrags a lot faster!

I like the fact that the interface there is more functional (you can e.g. do lookups file by ID or see where the file is).

I also love the fact that PerfectDisk never interferes with processes (doesn't call slowdowns) while running, whereas Diskeeper slowed down the system when kicked in -- and the icon in taskbar tray wasn't even right clickable until recent versions.

And so, for me it's Perfect Disk. With current pound to $ rate, and 1/4 discount I've got from their sales, it cost me about ?18.

Exec Software: Bite it, next time think before "diversification" of your product. (People on XP Pro don't deserve much higher price than those on XP Home -- they have already paid more for Pro, and don't need enterprise versions at home.)

That's correct although it depends on application's processing priority. Don't blame PD for that, it's Seti@Home which steal priority from PD.

Technically speaking, all running processes, except system services, should be stopped during defragment. That not only speed up defragment, but also defrags many more files, not been in use by other processes.

I use diskeeper 9, have been using it since issue 5.

How you can state it took 24hrs to defrag a 130gb HD is beyond me. Must be something wrong with your HD.

Never tried PD, happy enough with DK, very good piece of kit.

Diskeeper. My laptop was running so damn slow, until I realized I never defragged it in a long time. So I downloaded the trial edition of Diskeeper, ran it and voila! In one hour and fifteen minutes, my computer is as good as new. It even told me what I can do to fix some errors that were in my file settings and did them for me, which was the problem of it being slow. I love diskeeper. Never tried PerfectDisk yet, don't really intend to since Diskeeper is all I need.

I would go with Diskeeper; however, I never defrag my HD. I just format and do clean install every 6 months or so.

I've tried both, plus Norton, O&O...IMO Diskeeper gives the best disk performance. Plus it's definately a faster app!
