greenmachine
a few days ago my computer started to randomly disconnect me from the internet. I thought it was my modem, so i updated the drivers. didnt work. so i call up my isp and ask them if they can help. they give me the usual "is this or that light on, is the modem plugged in" newbie ****. 15 minutes ago it disconnected me, this time I was on irc though. and guess what? irc stayed up. I couldnt go to websites, sign on aim, or anything else internet related except for IRC. What the hell is going on? Sometimes it will disconnect me, i'll attempt to log back on and I'll get the (windows xp) blue screen of death. Please help. I really dont even know where to begin. I've never seen this before. Ask me anything you need to know. Here's a screenshot of my task manager Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/284808-i-really-dont-know-whats-wrong-with-my-computer/ Share on other sites
exotoxic
looks like you might have some bad processes running are there any more svchost.exe running?? its a normal windows process but too many is caused by virus/spyware can see examples at this page http://www.2-spyware.com/file-svchost-exe.html should run a check for spyware and virus scan... if they come back negative maybe try another scanner... none are perfect so something could slip through ;) another thing... check what things are in the startup list... if you see something suspicious go to google type the file name... if its something bad then there is usually lots of results explaining what it is and how to remove ;) Edited February 13, 2005 by minigun Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/284808-i-really-dont-know-whats-wrong-with-my-computer/#findComment-585465527 Share on other sites
LastSamurai
your tasks list looks perfectly fine to me, I highly doubt its viruses or spywares related. Frank
Download Spybot S&D and Adaware, update the patterns on both of these programs, and run a full scan. A lot of people say "I already have them installed, and they don't find anything", well if this is the case, make sure your pattern files are up to date AND you have the most recent version of both of these programs. Also go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and run a scan EVEN IF you have a virus scan program installed. You may also want to download the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta program. It picks up some stuff Adaware and Spybot doesn't find.
