i'm looking for some software where i can call a phone via my modem. i don't want to use VoIP. i effectively am trying to make my computer the actual phone and to just use the landline and my current service. i can't find any software that will do that for me since the advent of VoIP. can anyone help? i know netmeeting used to do that but i can't install and run it on XP, and the latest versions of Windows/MSN Messenger have removed that feature.

To get Netmeeting:

1: Click START then RUN

2: Enter "conf" without the quotes

what about the software that came with your modem?

awesome, thank you.

no software came with the modem. its hardwired into the computer (i'm on a laptop).

only other question is, is there any way i can make stereo out be line-in so i can play audio files through it, so i don't have to have a mic next to a speaker for the person on the other end to hear it?

hmmm....

i dont know what kind os sound you have but i guessing you use the regular windows Volume Control.

Ok so in netmeeting make sure you have recording tab set to your sound card ( Tools -> Audio Tuning Wizard).

ok open the volume control, if its no the speaker icon in the lower right then CONTROL PANEL -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Advance in the Device Volume section. Ok in volume control select Options -> Properties and select recording and click ok. in the Volume Control select Wave and adjust the volume to what you like that should let the audio files go through netmeeting but you cant talk since the mic has been unselected (you can only select one), so when your done just select mic and you will be back to using your mic. Good to keep the Volume Control open so dont close it so you can switch bacl and forth from Mic To wave
