It's worse than that.

You've got WinXP or similar with your drives formatted as NFTS, right? You've got a problem there as Win 95 not only needs a FAT(?:16|32) partition, it also has to be a primary partition and on the primary harddrive (C:).

If you manage to get that (by using a partition manager like Partition Magic), then you will be able to install Win 95.

BUT

You won't be able to dual boot back into WinXP as the boot files won't be on the first partition. Specifically, although you can have the OS on a different drive, there needs to be something (minimum a boot menu) set up / installed so you can access the other partition(s). All your installed programs will point to an incorrect drive unless you have hidden the Win95 partition and reassigned the drive letters on boot into WinXP (some boot managers can do this). An added bonus of the hiding of the partition is that you won't get constant grumbling that a non-NTFS drive was found by security checks.

In other words; install sequence is this:

1. Have a nice shiny new machine (or reformat and repartition the drive)

2. Install Win95

3. Install WinXP on a different partition.

Retrofitting is fraught with danger and difficulty. It is possible, but needs a lot more space than is available here (like a How To Guide).

The important question is: Why do you need to have Win 95 on your system? If it is so necessary, sandbox it inside a VMWare container and run it from inside Win XP.

I think Windows 95 needs to have FAT format on your harddrive. So it's either FAT-16 or FAT-32 (recommending 32) that you need to format your drive (partition) with, before installing 95.

Guessing you currently have NTFS format.

Fat it needs and depending on the edition, it can be fat 16 or fat 32 only or both.
