Computer seems fubared

Recommended Posts

We had a power outage this morning and somehow I think it managed to mess up my PC in one way or another. Since the lights came back on, my PC has been very slow to respond when opening menus and programs (i.e. my Start menu in Windows as well as IE and Firefox). I have also received weird errors such as the ones attached below. Any ideas what might be causing these?

Note that neither of these errors occurred prior to this morning.

Wow! Its been a while since I've posted here!

For the SpyBot error, simply uninstall and reinstall! Thats all u can do for that!

As for the Delayed Write Error, something could be wrong w/the controller chip on that drive, or the MFT could be fux0r3d. Backup what data you can and be prepared to replace the drive!

Get some hard drive diagnostics utilities and scan that drive! See if everything checks out ok. Don't bother using ScanDisk (Error Checker) 'cause it won't help u too much!

Ouch. BACKUP!

The delayed write erroe is impending doom for the drive.

The slow performance is another sign.

Go get a drive fitness test at your manufacturers site.

Also the Ultimate Boot CD contains these.

If it finds irrecoverable errors then you will likely need to RMA it.

I suppose its possible it could be the controller.

I had 2 drives fail in the last 6 months. One getting delayed write fails. This was a second storage disk. Eventually it would show as a drive letter but no contents would be displayed.

The 2nd drive was the main disk and Windows would take 15 min to boot. Performance was really bad. I went to format and reinstall and it failed the format. Then I ran the Seagate fitness test and it had a lot of bad sectors.

The funny thing is that I can see that drive in my computer now; but before the power surge / outage this AM I couldn't ... so I at first thought I had messed the jumper settings when I reconnected them last but I dunno wtf is going on here...

Its likely a coincidence that there was a power outage. Probably unrelated because that is a characteristic of a failing drive to sometimes not be recognized.

The D:\ drive is not my main drive right now (it used to be though). I am just using it for backup right now. So I am not as prudent on backing it up as I would be as if it were my main drive.

All it has on it is a slightly less recent (circa 2 1/2 weeks) backup of what is on this drive, minus some more hot women pics... :p
