Hey all,

I have finally done it, it took a lot of hard work I assure you but I ws finally able to edit the start text without worrying about Hex codes etc. :rambo:

I would of replied to a previous thread, but I thought I'd start one with Start Text changes aswell, let's see your text attempts. I have also found a way to get rid of the windows icon on the button, but I like it - and there's a way to change the side text when you click "DjmUK" (formerly "start").

Well there were so much confusion any alternative attempts, so here goes:

- Start/Run, then type: c:windowssystem32dllcache

- Delete explorer.exe (this isn't needed - believe me)

- Start/Run, then type: c:windowssystem32restore

- Now you should see the file filelist.xml. What? You don't see it? We can fix that. In windows explorer click Tools->Folder Options->View and scroll down where it says Hide protected operating system files (recommend) and un-check it. Also click where it says Show hidden files and folders, and uncheck Hide extensions for unknown file types. Lastly, hit Ok. Now, you should see filelist.xml listed. Right click on filelist.xml and click properties. Uncheck where it says Read Only and then click OK. Good, now we can edit filelist.xml. Right click filelist.xml again, and click Open with then on Notepad. The file should now be opened in notepad. This is where Windows File Protection looks to see if it needs to protect a file or not. Where it says:

%windir%system.ini

add this line above it (with REC etc.):

%sytemroot%explorer.exe

- Now, click file -> Save. (NOT Save as)

- Load up Resource Hacker

- File > Open > c:windowsexplorer.exe

- String Table -> 37 -> 1033

- To the right, you should see the words "start" - change it.

- Compile String

- String Table -> 38 -> 1033

- To the right, you should see the words "start" - change it to the same as b4.

- Compile String

- Hit CTRL+Left Shift+Escape

- Processes/explorer.exe (end process)

- Use ALT+TAB to switch screens.

- In resource hacker, press File > Save As > explorer.exe (and rewrite it)

- Taskmanager again > File > New Task > explorer.exe

That should do the trick.

Yep, peopel have been using this method to cahnge the start button text for over a month or more. the people from littlewhiltedog.com's forums have been duscussing this for a long time. Thanks for putting it into a guide on neowin though =p time to spread the word a little bit more and get rid of the confusion =p

It's really easy to do, all you have to do is open your favorite theme in reshacker. Go into the TEXTFILE subfolder. I am using the toothpaste theme (modified of course), but it shows NORMALBLUE_INI as a subfolder.

1) Click on the 1033 icon then goto the action menu and choose save as a binary file. Save it as test.ini

2) open test.ini in notepad

3) fine the [start::Button] section.

4) change the TextColor RGB values and save test.ini

5) back in reshacker, goto action, then replace other resource. Select test.ini, put TEXTFILE in the type box, then put NORMALBLUE_INI in the name box. Hit replace and you are done.

    • Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 PC case is now 33% off on Amazon by Ivan Jenic The Cooler Master MasterFrame 600 is currently $109.99 on Amazon, down from its original $164.99 list price. That's 33% off and $55 saved on this premium aluminum mid-tower case with a modular design. If you're upgrading your PC case and want something that doesn't force you into a rigid layout, the MasterFrame 600 is worth a look. The case is built around the Cooler Master's FreeForm 2.0 platform, which lets you reconfigure the internal structure according to your hardware. Magnetic side panels allow for straightforward adjustments, and the case supports everything from Mini-ITX to E-ATX motherboards without compromise. There's also generous cooling headroom. Four pre-installed PWM fans handle airflow out of the box. GPU clearance goes up to 410mm, and the case supports radiators up to 420mm with room for three simultaneously. Truth be told, this might not be the prettiest case on the market, but it’s highly functional. The aluminum construction keeps the whole thing lightweight despite its size, and the finish looks noticeably better than the plastic mid-towers competing at this price point. If you want a serious, flexible case that prioritizes function over flashy aesthetics like RGB lighting, the MasterFrame 600 delivers at a reasonable price.
