USB 2.0 Extension cable self powered?

Recommended Posts

ANY USB port, hub, or cable provides a low current power. On certain devices the power from the port itself is not enough to power the devices that are to run on the USB power.

Enter the Externally Powered USB hub. This provides much more power for all devices, and will not shut down device on you unless the hub detects a short. Even externally powered USB hubs can be run in a non-externally powered (internally powered?) fashion. The benefit of using a powered USB hub versus a non-powered USB hub is that the powered hub will always provide enough power for any device designed to run on a USB ports power.

Your USB cable uses 4 pins.

knowing that of the four pins on your cable, two of them are for power, the answer is YES, your cable does provide power, but is not considered "powered" as "powered" means Externally powered.
