Looking for a an audio recording program

I am looking for a program that will record from the line-in on my card. Some editing functions like cropping, normalizing and equalization are must haves but it doesn't have to be the best like Cubase. Just a simple freeware is better than nothing, though.

I am trying to work with Audacity but am having a problem. It doesn't seem to recognize my input from the line-in or any other plug in source., although the audio from the 8-track device does come through the speakers. It doesn't seem like there is a problem with Audacity or with my 8-track. Shouldn't I just be able to record the sound from the input as it is? The level sliders are up, the source says line-in, I hear the sound coming through the card but there is no indication on the vu meters and when I hit record it is a flat line. My windows volumes are not muted and the sliders are up. I have tried everything that I think of as obvious. What's up?
