Why buy a Mac?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why people buy stuff from Apple anymore cause it is just repackaged software that was designed by other companies. I can get OpenBSD for free and install it on any i386 I want and be a million times more secure than Windows or any FreeBSD kernel.

For computer beginners, I can see why people would buy one, cause they just damn easy to use, but for most of us, we are tech savvy and I dont know anymore.

I just prefer to use them over PCs, especially for my design work (Macs are standard in the design industry). However I wouldn't part with my PC at the same time, although I just use it for games and fooling around with Linux (Ubuntu 5.04 currently). Probably will end up replacing the PC with a console though, for my gaming needs.

PS. Are you having a whinge at the OS itself or the hardware or both?

Why buy an PC? it's all relative me thinks...all a matter of preference really. I'm a PC user and it suits me just fine :) ...but I'd also like a Mac simply cause they looks so damn cool (I know that's not really a valid reason  ...but hey you can't deny they look good  )...but seriously, it's all personal preference..well thats my 2 cents.

I have PC & Mac, they are both great, I don't see there is any reason not to use it.

Also, FreeBSD is the most secure OS according to recent studies. So don't discrimate other OS or computers. They both have their own good point of view.

As a PC user, I won't knock the Mac. I knocked it for years, and for good reason... until OSX. OSX is a very solid OS. For those that want to talk about "rip offs", it IS true that Apple used an older PPC FreeBSD distro to start from, they did it legally, they made a VERY smart move, and the ammount of innovation and work they have done to put OSX where it is today is a testament in and of itself. I think it's actually beginning to pull away from Windows in alot of areas... certainly in innovation. However, it won't really be able to storm forward without higher support from the application developers, in particular, the gaming industry. Don't get me wrong, they've come a LONG way since the old days when you couldn't play anything decent on a Mac. These days, however, the titles are beginning to come. If they continue their current rate of innovation up until Longhorn comes out, and Longhorn doesn't MAJORLY deliver, I may actually convert. We'll see. It's just as likely that by then I'll be running Linux full time. Ubuntu Hoary is very sweet (again though with the games).

Thats a good question.

If you can build your computing platform on a fad then more power to you I suppose.

Not sure why I'm compelled to comment on these threads. Maybe because Apple doesn't set right with me for some reason. I'm still not sure what it is. I keep going back to the blind following they have been able to conjure up based on "stylized computing" and the latest gimmick to get fans riled up to upgrade their isomething.

So what's your exact reason for disliking Apple? Because they set trends? That's a crappy reason if you ask me. I've used many OS's and I just find OS X to offer everything that I need. I bought the mac I am using now just to get to try something new, and I liked what was new. Maybe you should actually try one of Apple's products without a closed opinion on it. Many people say they've tried both, but they are not in the right mentality. It's like driving drunk, wrong mentality and wrong situation. Too many people here have closed minds and the world seems to revolve around them and their "non-conformist" opinions.

I bought a Mac when I realized that there was more to my computer experience than clock speed. Like many expensive items, only the owners are able to truly appreciate them while others just stare and say "Why did he buy item B when he could have bought the cheaper item A that does the same thing?". Its difficult to convey an experience in words, so your best option is to try out a Mac and be open minded about it. ;)

To tell you the truth I don't think it is the OS or the systems as much as the way people tend to be giddy about Apple's style.

I've used older Apple stuff and can't stand it. I don't feel they have started any trends unless you can call legal music downloaidng a trend. They seem to be a smart company or at least Jobbs is a smart guy. If you can sell some of the stuff they have come up with you have to be smart.

I find their commercials to be annoying. I find that they feel the need to make fun of other platforms to sell their own annoying. I guess the company comes off as "artsy fartsy" and that annoys me. :D

    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.

With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today. It blocks third-party data storage. It protects from browser fingerprinting. And it does all this by default. Speed - Brave is built on Chromium, the same technology that powers Google Chrome, and is optimized for speed, providing a fast and responsive browsing experience. Brave Browser also features Brave Rewards, a system that rewards users with Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for viewing opt-in ads. This innovative system provides an alternative revenue model for content creators and a way to support the Brave community. SlimBrave Neo takes all the good things about Brave and makes them even better by keeping everything clean, light, and privacy-focused. It removes the extra clutter, turns off features you might not need, and cuts down on anything that could slow you down or collect unnecessary data. Because it relies on simple settings and policies instead of modifying the browser itself, you still get full Brave compatibility—just in a smoother, lighter, and more privacy-friendly package.
