Why buy a Mac?

Let's see.....I'd like you to open a 'How Design Mag' and check out the 'their spaces' feature, every issue, all the design firms are toutin mac's....the newspaper I work @ (campus paper) is run on 15 or so powermacs....as is the newpaper my g/f works at.

It IS the standard...more so in the past...but that's not to say win machines can't cut it...it's just that's what macs are known for...

As for film, well...that's an equally all over the place medium. But I can tell you most lower budget film houses use macs and final cut pro HD.

It's not us that says it is...it's the industry.

well its not the OFFICIAL industry standard. PC's dont say "Apple compatible DV software included" on them.

but in windows, you have the option of either

a)reshack for free

b)buy stylexp

c)buy window blinds

in OSX you have

a}buy shapshifter(IIRC)

I would go mac if I wasn't such an avid gamer (they gotten better on catalogue just not $$$ for a good mac rig)

Plus it's easier for :pirate: 's on windows :(

well...

I work on final cut pro and shake at school on dual G5... they are pretty nice machines.. but when it comes to hardcore multitasking... I just think that even with a machine like that... my workflow lag as hell...

I've got to say that I prefer my dual Xeon P4 3Ghz than a dual G5....

...Yes Final Cuts rocks... but come on... it's a freakin editing software.... the new version of premiere does the exact same thing for me.... so I'd say I like final cut interface better... but the end result is the same...

As for shake, I like it.... but GOD DAMN I just prefer digital fusion on PC. Same node based interface... but personnally I think it's waaaay better... version 5 will even include raw 3d import ;) can't wait

Hmmm... for who? web design firm?? heh.... I don't want to go overboard here but i've worked for multiple design firms and the majority of them (i'd say a good 90%) work completely on PC....

Some TV studio I've worked for had some final cut pro stations.... that I can't lie.... but all around.... PC is a lot more used in the industry.... from pharmaceutical companies... up to design firm....

anyway... just my two cents..

it's not like i've never been in the industry... or never tried a mac

what kind of design work? i do alot of 3d design/thermal modelling work. All the apps are either for unix or windows.

Yeah, it does but it seems to happen about every few months rather than every day. I'm just not sure it's really a feature.

• Then launch Mail and take in Aqua.
  
• Start terminal and bask in text-based glory.
  
• Start an X11 app like oo.org and use that "what platfrom is this UI designed for" look.
  
• Launch GarageBand and take in the 1970's Atari interface style.
  
• Swing over to Final Cut Pro to see the "Way to professional for you" dark aqua-ish look.
  
• Take your FCP project into motion and let-loose in the "black monochrome transparent window orgy"
  
• Start your favorite Java application to see the "Stuck in the OS X public beta" look
  
• Launch an old copy of KidPix to see the old-school platinum interface.
  
• Lauch some of the developer tools (Quartz Debug) to see the "I learned interface design at ITT Tech." style.

3d/thermal...I have only seen on nix and win2000.

it doesn't matter what you work on, you can produc pdfs, tiffs, etc... on both a win/mac machine....so have at your preference...

yes, XP looks like ass unskinned, i agree, but i would prefer it if it all looked the same.

as for linux, i use KDE.

first, KDE apps use QT, duh.

second, gnome apps are done with the gtk-qt engine, which now is pretty mature, so gtk apps look like KDE apps as well

third, OOo has a KDE intefration pack which makes it look like, you guessed it, KDE.

fourth, azureus is the only java app i use, and surprise, surprise, it comes with crystal icons, the default for KDE.

so, yes, i do like a unified UI, and yes, i do use linux.

I dig both mac/win and have both...albeit I enjoy OSX by bounds, but windows has it's nuances that keeps the tower in my room...for now :p
