Why buy a Mac?

same kind of context menu, there just isnt anything in it  :p

im not sure who it was, but ive heard mac users say that the osx>linux  because the linux GUI isnt unified. you even just said it 5 posts ago. :shifty:

i don't mind the non-linear look...read again.

musta misread. anyway, the point is, linux can be linear, if that floats your boat.

as for OSX, personally, i hate aqua/brushed metal. i love milk though. too bad it doesnt come by default with OSX.

i used to use linux alot, ran debian and suse back in the day, but switched to xp for convenience...however, I enjoy linux much more than windows, and will soon be running it again...

milk is sexy for shure.

yet you bash linux for not having a unified GUI.

huh?

I love Linux GUI esp ubuntu Linux and gentoo my name is WinMacLin and I love Windows Macintosh and Linux I like windows because its there.. (lmao) I like Linux because its easy to personalise and I like Macintosh because its just easy does not require allot of thought to get something done.

just nevermind that.

I went to the Apple Store.

I'll have to think before I drop some $$$ on a new notebook though. I like all the stuff like iLife, Apple Mail and all the integration between programs, very fluid. I have some questions:

1. How easy is it to install software?

2. Can I run OpenOffice 2.0 Beta on it?

3. I hate iTunes, what other media players are available?

4. Can I use a 3-button mouse (2 button, 1 scrollwheel)?

5. How much RAM do you recommend?

1. How easy is it to install software?

It ranges between drag+drop to fixing dependencies and compiling your own code.

On the whole it's not any worse than Windows.

2. Can I run OpenOffice 2.0 Beta on it?

Sure, if that's what excites you.

3. I hate iTunes, what other media players are available?

a bunch

4. Can I use a 3-button mouse (2 button, 1 scrollwheel)?

if you can plug it in.

5. How much RAM do you recommend?

as much as you can afford.

I use a Mac mainly for the applications it runs. I like iLife, Final Cut Express, Delicious Library, 3D Weather Globe, Mail.app, iTunes Library, QuickSilver, Office 2004, Camino, iChat AV, the list goes on.

I also like getting a new OS every 1-2 years. Personally I'd rather fork out the money and get new features then wait 6 years to get an OS update.

I also use a Mac because I prefer its UI. I hate how a program in Windows wants to dominte the whole screen. I hate the taskbar, it gets too cluttered and doesn't work well when lots of apps are open. I love OS Xs dock, I can keep programs, folders, and minimized windows in it. I like OS X's springloaded folders and expose.

It is also nice that I can run linux/unix apps in X11 if I want and haveing a bash terminal is a nice touch as well since I used linux heavily before switching to the Mac.

Apple's hardware is nice as well, everything seems so much more durable and better made compared to what I've used from other vendors.

Like someone else said I moved to the Mac when I realized hardware specs aren't everything.

I would use the OSX but im so damn used to using the right click on windows :pinch:

585662968[/snapback]

Then plug in a two, three, or whatever-number-of-button-you-like mouse and right click all you want. Just because Macs don't ship with multi-button mice doesn't mean they don't support them.

same kind of context menu, there just isnt anything in it  :p

Have you even used OSX? the menu offers the same stuff you would find on a Windows machine! Jesus Christ so much misinformation - and Apple are releasing a 2 button mouse so you cant say anything.

1, 4 & 5

1. mostly drag and drop install, drag and drop uninstall. There are some strange circumstances where you might want to delete the preferences, but the folder PACKAGE has all of the program guts in it generally.

4. YEs, and you can program the buttons, no driver neccesary. I have a mx300 (i think) grey shuttle design. and use buttons 3 & 4 for expose!

5. you will notice substantial speed increases the more you have.

i use both, or will anyhow. ill keep my pc cause im a gamer at heart, but for everything else, im getting an ibook for school, and in my room im gonna just spend like 50 bucks and get an old imac g3 blueberry, which happens to run osx just fine (we have some at school that run osx). Every os has its own pros and cons, its just all preference and what you need/what you like.

I've always used windows. Then, 2-3 years ago, my feeling towards ms and windows started seriously going downhill ..and the more I learned about longhorn and their future goals, the more these feeling were amplified. I finally came to appreciate the importance of there being alternatives. I had already been using mozilla products, and decided to try out linux. I liked linux and learned a lot, but I never settled on a particular distro too long term. Then, about 9 months ago, I decided to get an ibook. This is the first apple computer I've used since the 80s. I did a lot of research for a long time beforehand. I have enjoyed and made good use of it thus far. I lean towards the opinon that osx > linux, for now at least. Both have features that I find lacking in the other. But in any case, I fully intend for my assocation with ms and windows to decrease over time. The sole purpose of my windows box currently is games, and if games become more common on mac and linux, I'd be rid of it in a heartbeat. I'm strongly considering getting another mac later this year, a G5 pm most likely. But it's not set in stone though. I'm not currently running any linux and I may go back to that instead. I'm waiting to see how things turn out after Tiger is released, if any prices drop, ect. And I'm always interested in trying new linux distros.

    • OpenAI is making Codex more useful in Chrome and the cloud by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI's Codex now has more than 5 million users, up nearly 4x from earlier this year. To further accelerate Codex's growth among developers, OpenAI today announced that it has agreed to acquire Ona, a company that builds secure cloud execution and orchestration technology for developers. Ona will enable developers to run Codex with persistent and controlled cloud infrastructure for long-running agentic workflows. Right now, most Codex execution happens locally on developers' laptops and PCs, and the agents work continuously for hours. Through Ona, OpenAI aims to make Codex agents keep working for days without being tied to a user’s local machine or an active session. This will be an important capability for enterprises that want to deploy AI agents in production while maintaining control over infrastructure, data, security boundaries, credential scope, logging, and review workflows. Like any acquisition, the deal is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the deal closes, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as separate companies. After closing, Ona’s team will join the Codex team to improve developer workflows. Alongside the Ona acquisition announcement, OpenAI today introduced a few Codex updates. Developers can now save Codex rate limit resets and use them later instead of losing them when they are not needed immediately. OpenAI is also adding a referral option where users can invite a friend to Codex and get a saved rate limit reset. OpenAI today also announced a developer mode for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. With this mode, Codex can use the Chrome DevTools Protocol to debug web apps, inspect pages, and work more directly with browser-based development workflows. Developers can use this when they want Codex to profile JavaScript, inspect console output and network traffic, examine web page states including the DOM and applied styles, and more.
