Symantec did norton for people who care for the design and don't care about the speed of thier PC , but symantec is for professionals

Symantec Antivirus Corp is intended to be used on workstations and servers in a business environment.

If you are so concerned about ram usage, get a different Antivirus program. And avoid McAfee.

Do what azPNG said! Get a grip man. How long have you been using computers? Really, by now you should know that they are the same product, there are variations on the theme but all the same company!

well norton ( and any virus scan software that has a constant protection option) will have something running in the background. so when you downlaod a file it auto scans it

standard anti virus is a fairly big resource hog, and internet security is even worse.

i like good ol norton anti virus corperate. low resource usage but dosent get updated as often and its scanning algarithems arnt as up to date as the latest mainstream anti virus

but then again i know what i shoudlent be downloading, so im not TOO woried about it

Hey jacko! BOTH DA SAME COMPANY! HAHAHAHAHAH!

Symantec=norton. www.symantec.com IS NORTON! HEHEHE

Symantec is da name of da company. Norton is one of Symantec's product lines. In other words, Symantec does not equal Norton. Jacko! HEHEHE

From Symantec's Corporate Information page (Here):

Symantec's Norton brand of consumer security products is a market leader in desktop protection

Get something straight

1. Symantec Corporate Anti-virus, faster, less resource-hungry, better detection

2. Norton Anti-virus, slow, bloated, resource-hungry

Now, I'm thinking you may want to try out nod32 or symantec corp. Get your task manager open and you can see how much norton is eating up your ressources, if you don't know which ones are which you can use a program or just post.

I'm really surprised that a whole load of you don't know the difference between Norton and Symantec.

Symantec is the name of the company.

Norton is the name of the comsumer product.

Norton used to be owned by a Mr. Norton bloke till Symantec bought his entire Norton product line out. His Norton AntiVirus product is sold at retail and from the website. These are the ones with activation (because they are retail products).

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is the name of the product that is sold to businesses. The fluff from Norton is not on this, but it does roughly the same thing (scan viruses). However, this version links to a server in which the virus definitions and other updates are downloaded from. This way, the product updates are centrally managed. Of course you don't have to use the server-link part, you can run it as a stand-alone. This product doesn't have any product activation because they are sold as part of a bulk licence pack to businesses.

Both of these products are updated regularly and at the same time.

Ah yeah, but Norton's a consumer product, it makes sense to change it once a year to keep up with current threats (they change the range of stuff it can do e.g. one year it had a file protection/shredder thing, now it has a firewall-type thing). Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition doesn't need updating as it doesn't come with fluff, also businesses wouldn't buy a new one every year.

I agree that Norton became a horrible resource hog. I used all Symantec Products until version 2005 and this version is by far the most bloated one. I switched to PC Cillin Internet Security 2005 the winner of all editor choices in major magazines, online reviews etc. It's currently the best commercial complete security product on the market..and god you should see how often they update their virus definitions. Very good and very light on resources.

Sorry to revive this very old thread but... I'm also trying to figure out which one to choose. I've been a SAV user for more than 2 or 3 years now.

How about SAV 10.1 vs the latest version of NOD32.

Does NOD32 support network or centralization? Can I manage remote clients, or better said, does it behave as a server/client software?

The network module is fundamental to me, but keep in mind that my network is quite small, smaller than you image. :D

yes, you can do all that with NOD32.

any antivirus/protection program uses resources to execute its tasks.. and that requires resources, which end up in your computer becoming slower.

Don't matter if you use NOD, Symantec, Kaspersky, AVG.. they ALL will slow the PC down if they are working correctly. Some will cause more of a slowdown than others, some will protect better than others..

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
