i am using a prolink hurrican 8000 modem (max of 3.4mbps) with an adsl connection of 512/128kbps. i normally get receive rates ranging from 10kbps to 70kbps. do u think this is the normal speed?

another thing is that on morpheus, i can only get receive rates of like 7-18kbps now no matter which host i m receiving from. i used to haf receive rates up to 40kbps when using an aztech turbo 900 modem.

is there any way that i can tweak it so i can get higher receive rates?

hey inferno..i pretty much get the same kind of speed..im using a nokia adsl modem with a connection speed of 256kbps..i get between 10-20kbps downloads...i doubt that's good enough..that's only about 2 times better than a 56k i think..i do know the central office is more or less in the same area as i am..

whats the deal? could it just be the ****ty telephone lines?

256k will get you speeds of a max of about 25K a sec

512k will get you speeds of a max of about 50K a sec

dsl isnt shared with the neighborhood like cable is.

i think you need to inform the company that you're not getting the advertised speeds..

There a number of solutions but how far do you live from the telephone exchange?
I'm not sure.
Do you usually use it at evening time?

No. I'm having school holidays now so I use it mostly in the afternoon and night.

I know that some bandwith is reserved for telephone conversations and such but shouldn't a 512kbps adsl get dl speeds of like more than 100kbps dl speed on a faster server?

The fastest I ever got was like 76kbps. As I said, my dl speed dropped tremendously on Morpheus after I switched to a USb adsl modem. What could be the cause?

USB Cable/DSL Modems Suck! Go Back to Ethernet!

I used to use Ethernet, but my modem went wrong after leaving it on 1 night to download some large files (power adapter could have got burned).

What would be a good brand of adsl ethernet modems?

USB modems will utilise the cpu to do its work and if you have anything running in the background the CPU is using then your connection will suffer.

Hmm.. I'm left with 52mb of ram now. I have 256 mb of ddr ram.

Because I just got it last nite, I'm somewhat new to this but...

I just replaced my old no-name PCI 10mb ethernet card with a Linksys USB FastEthernet 10/100 adapter. the cable goes into the modem, then an RJ45 goes from the modem to the USB. I've seen an increase in speed while surfing and downloading since hooking it up thru this last nite... so your above comment can't possibly apply to this, can it?

Divide bitrate by 8, then you get the max speed.

I have 512kbps ADSL and I get 57-60kB/s

Rofl. DSL goes through a similiar bottleneck that cable does. Whoever thinks that DSL just "dumps out onto the internet and never meets any traffic" is both dillussional and unaware of how networks work.

As for the "CPU use" crap, many low-end ethernet cards do not have an onboard preprocessor to take (some) of the load off of the CPU. I imagine the ONLY time you'd see a "slow down" in a USB connection is if you set a program (with 100% CPU useage) to operate in "real time."

Probably just have a crappy line, or, even more likely, a crappy ISP. Complain or get cable.

go for DirecWay satellite, www.direcway.com

Since I live so far out in the bounies and hated dialup, even tho.. *cough* dialup was better for "live" "first person" gaming at least *cough*, so I got satellite, 1-way, then we upgraded to 2-way when it came out at a discounted rate of like $70/month i think it's $90/month regular usuage.

I always get 2.5mb/sec but 45kbps/75kbps upload ;)

not good for gaming but mp3s here i come! :p

also they "FAP" you which means they slow down your connection once u reach a certin limit, i think it's 300mb in a 24 hour period.

depending on your plan
