Neowin Interviews AMD - x64 @ WinHEC 2005

Where is all the merchandise?

I'd like to be able to buy a hat, t-shirt, or coffee mug, etc. to show my support for AMD when I'm not in the market for a new machine.

Good idea, I would also be interested in merchandise to show my support ;)

hi, long time lurker, first time post,

Any chance you can ask them if with hindsight they see swapping x86-64 for a free Itanium license as a mistake now they've seen the market for the Athlon 64, surely they hype surrounding the product would have justified a license fee from Intel.

Think they did anyway... remember reading a news item on it ages ago, please correct me if I'm wrong

Since the DDR controller is built directly into the AMD64 processors, to transition to DDR2 would mean a new motherboard AND a new processor.

It will also add more complication to the already complicated lineup of Athlon64 processors:

- Single Channel, Socket 754 Athlon64

- Dual Channel, Socket 939 130nm Athlon64

- Dual Channel, Socket 939 90nm Athlon64

You guys want to add a fouth? Heh, we'll need to consult an encyclopedia before buying ;-).

Anyways, I'll be meeting with AMD as well at WinHEC  so, I'll also be using some of the better questions from this thread :-P.

I'd like to ask them if they expect further reductions in power consumption for their Athlon 64 939s 2800 to current, with newer drivers for Windows.

Half the time I'm using my computer (A64 3000+), I'm only browsing the web, checking e-mail and word processing. With this type of usage, I'm hoping more throttling would be available.

AMD is also doing research in solid state/flash memory if I recall. It would be interesting to know how much progress is being made and what future applications they invision this storage to use. (This might be an all *hush, hush*, or no comment type of question. ).

Yes.. ask about s754's future and also the compatibility of Dual Core with the s939 current chipsets. I would hate to see the s754 totally unsuported, but would feel better if the current s939 mobo's couldn't upgrade to Dual Core, just cause then I would have made a wise choice getting the s754 :p sorry to be negative...

Yes, please make dual core 754 Amd64 cpu!!!!!

okay that's not a question, but a request.

i doubt that

they could give that for free :shifty:

and...

could you ask them what they think of my sig :p

Whys everyone bothering about DDR2, look at the benchmarks they hardly show any improvement over DDR1.

DDR2 memory for desktops still have yet to mature, so their latencies are really high, which causes lack of performance. (kinda like what brought RDRAM down)

  • 2 weeks later...
They already do its just not a popular option unless you move into server stuff. theres a amd 8*** something chipset for s940/opteron servers. that was last time i looked into it.

My Questions.

Intel has already announced special instruction sets for longhorn. What is amd preparing for the longhorn era.

Will it be possible we will see turion based desktop systems to market for consumers wanting a wireless low profile based desktop (similar to what intel is wanting to do with the centrino) ?

If these arnt answered ill just ask one of the 3 amd people I see at all the austin lan partys.  ;)

Is one of them Mark?

    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
    • If the drive/memory is soldered to the board, which it probably is, then it's a no from me
