Free Bulletin Board + Cheap Hosting

Question

Hi

I am looking to build a system for my local community. I have agreed to foot the cost for this, so I am looking at doing this as cheaply as possible.

My needs are:

* Cheap/free "Invision-like" system

* Cheap hosting for the above

* Registration of domain name for above

* Quite a few pop3 email addresses for above domain

Anyone able to help a fellow out with a few suggestions?

Hi

I am looking to build a system for my local community.  I have agreed to foot the cost for this, so I am looking at doing this as cheaply as possible.

My needs are:

* Cheap/free "Invision-like" system

- phpBB

- PunBB

- MyBB

All those boards are free. None of them are as feature packed as Invision, but all have modifications available to add anything you need. If you really like Invision, you could use their free trial, however if your community is going to grow, it will be quite limited (5000 posts, 1000 topics, 1000 PMs, 200 members), and it's also encoded so you can't alter the files.

* Cheap hosting for the above

I'd recommend A Small Orange for your webhosting needs. I personally don't have hosting with them, but I know lots of people that do and are very happy with their services. It's run by Neowin's timdorr. You could also have a look at the top hosts thread.

* Registration of domain name for above

Most webhosts allow you to register a domain through them, but Godaddy would probably be the cheapest option.

* Quite a few pop3 email addresses for above domain

Depends on which host you choose, some limit you with your pop3 email addresses, some allow unlimited. Have a good shop around.

I installed PHPbb last night, and it's OK.  But it's nothing like Invision :(

Could have sworn invision used to do a free version that just had a text advert :(

Invision did have a free version up until version 2.02 when it went fully payed. There are still copies of it floating around, but I think you had to be in possession of it before it went payed to legally use a copy.

    • lol it was a typo, fixed! haha imagine an actual 4TB Gen4 NVMe for $40 in 2026
    • Get over it, has nothing to do with my point.
    • I really don't like these rounded corners and huge borders in the viewport. They just waste space without anything in return.
