Thanks for listening,

Thanks a lot redrope for backing me up on this.

erm...sorry to interject my 2 cents here, but dunno about all that James. You know I like you, and respect your work quite highly. But IMO I would be flattered above all else if people liked my work enough to emulate it. Taking my PSD's and making sets identical to mine I wouldn't be too happy with, but similar looking images inspired by what I do would be ok in my book. That's the history of art from the beginnings of time. Artistic trends start with the ideas of one artist, others imitate them, change them and expand on the original concepts. Then another trend comes along, so on and so forth.

I can see you are amazed and inspired by Pixeljerk's work (as I am)...as your work resembles his very much IMO You are not copying him per say, but for the most part, all I have seen of your work looks very much like his. Then couldn't you apply your thoughts above to yourself also? If Pixeljerk were to say to you "Man, your stuff looks too much like mine so I think you have to stop creating images because it's my time to shine and not yours and your glass icons are way too similar to the ones I have made." Besides, an orb is a bubble is an orb...the idea isn't yours, and if you believe it is, take a look at the myriad of orbs and bubbles that are out there, not only do they flood the Mac icon community, but in our own XP community as well. If other icon artists such as FOODS and Dazzla were to hold to your opinion they could as well be upset that you were making 'bubble' icons because they did them first...you see what I am getting at here?

I can understand you being protective of your work...copyright it and don't share it then if you are so worried about people expanding on your ideas. I understand that we truly get attached to each one of those images we create, at least for me, every icon posted here is like one of my 'kids' that I am sharing with the rest of the people. I too am protective of my images...but being the artist that I believe I am, it's in my artistic nature to share my images with others because that is what grounds me in my art. What good are my images if I hold on tightly to them and never let another person see them? If others are not inspired by what I do then I have failed miserably in my art. If I see just one person whom I have shared my work with feel inspired enough to take off on one of my ideas I feel I have succeed in what I do.

I have been in the graphics field now for over 6 years...I have had websites ripped, images stolen and manipulated and uploaded with another's signature on them, etc...but you know what? I would have never kept them from others...ever! It's the price you pay once you share one of your 'kids' with the world. You may never get them back, but you know in your heart you may have enriched or inspired even just one person by making their world just a tad more lovely and pleasant to be in for even just a split second. That is art!

Don't take any of what I said as negative statements...just learn to feel joy and gladness at being the sourse of inspiration to others. That means you have made a positive mark in their lives.

Respect my friend :)

Guys I agree with Sutton. This is enough. He started these icons to get ideas and now everyone is starting to create exact replicas of his idea as he is making the icons. This isnt ok. Just stop and let him do his work.

I agree... I know how I would feel if people were doing the same while I didn't want them to. If he wants to do this by himself, just follow his orders.. after all, without his ideas there wouldnt have been these other icons popping up in the first place.

This goes out to Marvilla.

I respect you too; you've contributed a lot to the Neowin community. In regards to pixeljerk, Sam and I are good friends and I've asked him, whether or not he feels my icons resemble anything like his, he clearly stated no. ?Cause he was explaining to me how so many people have been copying his icons. This icon looks nothing like his; besides the fact the outer ring is grayscale. But I've incorporated my own aqua style etc. into it. That's the Suttan way! Well, I hope this straightens things out and I really don't want to talk about this anymore on this thread. I say, we drop this and go on our marry way. This shouldn't turn into a discussion on who copied who or whatever. Sorry I brought it up, it won?t happen again.

Have a good day everyone, sorry for this uproar.

Some other icons I've made.

Wow. People handeling themselves as adults! I am impressed.

As far as helping Ravager convert 'his' icons, when I made that offer I missed the entire concept that 'his' icons were a take-off on jsuttons. Sorry about that. Offer to help rescinded for the time being. I'd like to wait until jsutton has finished his set and is cool with the idea of additions to his icons.

I completely agree with a 'hands-off' policy on jsuttons project unless he asks or states otherwise. While I agree with Marvilla that once your work is online you should be prepared for it to get abused (isn't that a truth?) and misused, at least here at Neowin we can perhaps show enough respect for other members to let them do their 'thing' for the community.

Knowing jsutton the limited time I've known him he's a good guy (girl? I assume you're male from the way you post); let's not push him over the line.

Of course, once he's finished, I'm all for ripping him off and doing his work a diservice! (j/j ;) )

Yea. Sorry if you took that the wrong way bro. I REALLY like ur design and wanted to see if I could imitate it. I would NEVER ever have released icons without your permission (note the times I mentioned you when posting up my versions of the icons).

Also... I don't recall saying they were "MY" icons... I may have said something and you interpreted it different... dunno. I don't recall saying they're my icons.

Trust me, I don't plagarize... besides apple's mac look :p

First, I agree with Marvilla, round/sphere/bubble icons are not an original idea. Many long before jsutton, created these type of icons. So I wouldn't get to worked up about who created them first. For jsutton to claim these as an original idea is beyond ludicrus.

Second, I agree with jsutton to a certian extent about this thread. If others want to post their round/sphere/bubble icons do so in another thread, don't hijack this one. Of course it was kind of your fault jsutton for saying

... (nothing wrong with woman, gotta love um' and everything about :lick: um'!)...

I'm sure Marvilla would be happy to hear theres nothing wrong with being a woman, as she probably has a vested interest in womanhood.

Again, just messing with ;)

So where are these icons? And what do you have against MSN? Please don't make me install something else just to msg you... :D :D

There are quite a few out there that will teach you how to get that glass lit bubble look @ce:

Our own FOOODS Bubble tutorial :)

Matthew Bice's Aqua bubble tutorial Make sure you click the x-icons link on the front page then look for the 'tutorial' link in his navigation bar at the bottom of the second page.

Pixeljerk's Aqua Button How-To This is more a button than an icon, but you can see just how he creates the special lighted effect in his tutorial.

DV-Graphics Aqua tutorial A bit of a twist from what we are so used to seeing in regards to these bubble icons but nice just the same.

And who knows...maybe I may just make a Viewlet sharing how I make mine with y'all as soon as I get some free time :D

First of all, I wanna say that you icon designers (Dazzla, jsutton, pixeljerk, and many more !) amaze me ! Your contribution to "Net art" is incredible !

So will we ever see the download link for these icons ? :) I just installed Dreamweaver MX (what a great piece of software !), and I'm really forward to customizing that little shortcut lying on my desktop... ! :) Thanks in advance !

Hey, thanks a lot.. There?s no way in hell you can compare me to Pixeljerk. But thanks, I'll post the download think shortly. Redrope is the one that offered to convert the PSD's into icon format, so give him a round of applause. I would have done it myself, but I'm too busy with making the icons for the Quantum Theme and my upcoming web site. I'll keep everyone posted...

Hiya James,

You've done an absolutely fantastic job on the icon preperation, the ockups are stunning.

One thing I do have to add while reading through this thread though, this idea isn't unique you know. The idea of a bubble/orb with a surround has been done before although admittedly not as high quality as this. So when you get upset that people are "copying" you, they aren't really.

Anyway, enough of that, fantastic work with the icons like I said, I'm definitely looking forward to them.

Keep up the good work.

Dazzla.

You just had to burst his 'bubble', didn't you?

    • Windows 11 KB5094126, KB5093998 bugging out Office apps but it may not be Microsoft's fault by Sayan Sen Microsoft last week released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. Although the tech giant did not acknowledge any major problems, some users online reported various issues ranging from OneDrive and Dropbox access problems, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. You can read about them in this dedicated piece. While there is still no confirmation about those problems from Microsoft the company has admitted to another bug which we did not report on. The tech giant has confirmed it has received reports of an issue in which certain third-party applications may be unable to launch Microsoft Office apps or open Office documents after installing the Patch Tuesday. This affects both Windows 11 as well as Windows 10. The company says the problem impacts a subset of applications that rely on OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) automation to communicate with Microsoft Office programs. According to Microsoft, affected scenarios involve third-party software attempting to open Office applications or documents from within their own interface. In such cases, the Office program may fail to launch altogether, or the requested document may not open. Oddly there may not be any error message, which probably makes the issue difficult to diagnose. The bug affects several Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other apps in the Microsoft Office suite when they are launched through the affected software. These include tax and accounting software such as CCH Engagement and Workpaper Manager, dental practice management solutions like Dentrix and Softdent, as well as the popular research and reference management tool Zotero. Microsoft adds that other applications using similar Office integration methods could also experience the same problematic behavior. To understand the issue it is important to look at OLE, the Microsoft technology involved. OLE allows different applications to work together and share data, while its Automation feature lets one program control another. Thus this enables third-party software to launch Microsoft Office apps, open documents, and perform tasks automatically without requiring users to switch between programs. Because many accounting, healthcare, research, and business applications rely on OLE automation to interact with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office apps, any disruption can break those workflows. As a result, affected software may be unable to open Office documents or launch Office applications even though the programs themselves continue to work normally. At the moment the company has not provided a permanent fix though it has confirmed that engineers are actively working on a resolution, which will be delivered through a future Windows update. As such additional details will be shared once more information becomes available. In the meantime, Microsoft recommends a simple workaround for affected users whic is to open the Office application or document directly rather than launching it through the third-party program. For enterprise customers and organizations managing larger deployments, Microsoft says an additional mitigation is available. Admins experiencing the problem on their managed devices are advised to contact Microsoft Support for business to obtain and apply the workaround.
