xp64 Anti Virus Software. What To Use?

Question

Okay, I just installed xp64 on another partition, just to play around with for right now. I started a thread about it here, which goes from my initial questions/concerns to my current state of xp64.

So far, so very good.

However, I disconnect my ethernet cables everytime I boot into xp64, because I am as you could imagine very scared to be connected at all since I currently have no Anti Virus software installed.

Sadly my personal favorite and what I have running currently on XP2, Nod32, is not yet supported/working properly for xp64.

I googled the topic before I started this thread, and I read alot of ups and downs and conflicting stories about what to use, so I am asking anyone who is currently running xp64, what they are using?

So my question is, what is a good, well known/trusted, working Anti Virus App for xp64?

Since for all practical purposes I am just playing around with xp64 right now, I dont mind using trial software as long as it is easy to uninstall (i.e. not like Nortons), so I am open to that. I already downloaded Kaspersky as this was one app I kept seeing being mentioned, but I am curious before I do install it to see if there are any other recomendations from any members.

Of course if there is a freeware alternative, that would be the best scenario, but I am not holding my breath on that one.

Also, since it is semi on the same topic, does anyone know if Spybot and AdAware run okay on xp64?

TIA to anyone that can help, and I hope this thread can also be used as a reference for members in the near future as well.

I think that a antivirus soft is very importent these days and i never go online without having installed a good av.

Well DirtyLarry if you want a good antivirus soft that works 100% on Winxp 64 then you must install Avast antivirus pro 4.6.603 because that one works 110% ,and as far as i know is this the only one that works.

I think that it will not take long before others will folow and update there software to 64 bit to make it compatible.

doesnt WinxP64 come with a 32bit emulator- so you can run 32bit apps in 64bit?

It does, but i think the underlying IO filter system that AV programs use may have changed. I'm not sure so don't quote me on that

but as for being afraid about viruses in windows x64, since SP2 there haven't been any remote virus threats, if anything you could get infected by a trojan. I would assume that XP x64 is even more protected from viruses because it is built on top of the windows server 2003 code base, so if anything you should run a firewall and not open e-mails featuring nude pics of Jessica Alba

its because most antivirus use "virtual" devices that requires drivers and Win x64 isn't compatible with 32bit drivers

I have been running x64 since early releases and am currently at RC2, will be updating to the final shortly, anyway...AVAST works no problems, it's the only AV at the present time that is able to prtect an x64 install. Updates when it should and uses very little overhead.

Has anyone tried Avast?

585802735[/snapback]

I'm running avast 4.6 Home Edition on my x64.

Runs really good!

On first install i had a weird problem:

After installing avast, my internet explorer didn't show any webpage.

Turned the avast's web-security off. Worked then.

And it is FREE for 1 year. Just need to register.

im using NOD32 as well, but I notice some weird problems running it as opposed to when its not installed. Sometimes when I boot up my machine and want to go to start or the taskbar, I just get an hourglass. After a reboot im fine, but every once in a while it acts up. Using Avast! I never get that problem. Why in the heck doesn't NAV2006 have x64 support?

    • And none of them have a "notchless" 3:2 OLED screen, for which I was always willing to pay more.
