The best way to install apps in Linux is to use your built-in package manager. Let it go out and find what is needed and install it for you. When you update your system, then these apps you add will be updated to latest versions, too. (Y)

And, if you want a nice GUI front-end to apt-get, try synaptic. It may be already on your Ubuntu install. (if not, just apt-get it)
