CPU 3 GHZ cannot support win98 ?

but i cannot install win98 on it ?

but win XP installed .

why ?

There is a bug when you cross over 1.8 ghz... there is a patch on Microsoft's web site about it.. I've ran into it on my 2.4ghz box. Just run a search.

Why even bother with 98...that CPU should handle XP with no problems at all

Was your hard-drive formatted with NTFS? Windows 98 does not support NTFS. If you really want to install Win98 you'll need to make sure the drive is formatted with FAT32.

just install windows XP pro it be your best bet so ya get the maxx performance out of the procceser also if your running a 3ghz P4 with Ht then windows 9x dont support HT . but evan if it is just AMd 3000+ 32bit or 64bit just install XP

somehow windows 98 have a problem with ram too if theres more than 512 of ram the system wont work at all =/

Maybe he doesn't have a Windows XP license. Contrary to popular belief, they do in fact cost money.

Although for that high end kind of machine I would recommend at least shelling out for XP Home.

If you want faster load times, and still a good OS get Windows 2000.

It's arguably better then XP except not quite as pretty. :D

Is that an Intel-only bug? I haven't run into any problems installing 98 on my 2.0-2.4ghz Athlon XP box... I have run into the AMD 350mhz timing problem, trying to install Windows 95 on my K6 550 and my 1533mhz AthXP (just for fun), though

98 is not as stable as XP and tends to break itself more often. Just get a copy of 2000Pro OEM from newegg or some place like that. It doesn't have the XP bloat but has the stability and compatability of the NT5.x core.

What file system did you format your hard-drive with? FAT32 or NTFS?

In the UK Win2k Pro (These are oem prices) still costs more than XP Home.

It's a waste of time installing Win98 on a machine of that spec as it's not gonna handle it well at all.

Not sure why it isn't installing, like has been said above make sure your hdd is formated to FAT32, but like was also said havng over 512MB will make win98 run slower (due to poor caching routines).

I wouldn't spend the time and effort trying to install, i know it's added expensive but you will need to shell out for a copy of XP Home, a small bonus is if your processor is new it might have HT technology which win2k and XP (XP supports better) supports.
