Empire Earth 2 Review

Recommended Posts

Having played EE II for 2 days now, I can honestly say fans of the original Empire Earth won't be impressed. There are several new features that simplify otherwise mundane tasks but the enviroment interaction engine is more a hindarence then a help.

Graphics wise the game is more spatial, but less friendly. I for one am not a big fan of the way it expresses itself.

If anyone here has ever played Age of Mythology you will understand why I rant about this. AoM was AoE with all the fun taken out. Just too many features and not enough user exploration.

The Picture in Picture feature is a cool idea, but doesn't really help. If it was applied to the original EE, it would have been a welcome sight. The civilain manager is a cool tool but combined with the auto-rebuy, there is no real worry about resources, and that is really what makes an RTS a struggle and fun.

Anyone who ever played the original EE knows how much fun it was to spend hours building, expanding, fighting, and advancing. The new Empire Earth's tech point system is not based on constructing buildings and requires a number of points to advance to the next Epoch. This is good and bad. It might be a little more *realistic* but makes it so if you want to race to the space age, you had better set aside about 8 hours of time to play the game.

All in All, it's playable at best. I am a big fan of WC3, AoE 2, Civ III, and all those other RTS games. I feel that Mad Doc Studios could have done a better job, but that is just my personal opinion. EE II is a prime example of when a good game gets WAY too much extra baggage inserted into it and makes it less fun to play. If you really want to spend $40 and find out yourself, go ahead. Take what I have to say with a grain of salt and have a nice day.

Although AoM was less fun, it was a nice change, and also I have to mention it was NOT part of the AoE franchise, so really, it was fine for what it was. Never played Empire Earth however, but sometimes things need to grow on the player because you've been accustomed to something for so long in the original EE, but what should I know?? lol

Obviously AoM was not part of the AoE series ( Hopefully AoE III won't dissapoint me :p). Empire Earth is definitly worth playing if you are into RTS's but to each his own. I personally disliked AoM, but you are entirely right that they need to grow. I just feel that RTSs as a whole are so much better without too much extra crap and that's what EE II has. :/

My point was I'm just expressing my opinions

Your point was I aquired the game before the release date...which is my problem and I appriciate you pointing it out to me

oh yea, i saw that it was available. :shifty: i was wondering about that.. i guess it got leaked. i was lookin forward to playing it, too bad it'll be a 'disappointment' - i guess ill prolly still buy it since it doesnt cost much when its split up between 4 friends for a lan party.

What is your thoughts on the multiplayer aspect of the game? Oh that is right, you downloaded this copy written pc title illegaly.

    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
