mouse class driver service errors on an NT4WS..

Recommended Posts

basically, the mouse on an NT4 workstation has lost functionality. it's a ps2 mouse.

upon login, a message comes up saying that a device or service failed to start and all that. event viewer shows the following three entries in chronological order -

eventID 7026 (source: service control manager) - the following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: Mouclass.

eventID 7 (source: mouclass) - could not locate the device object for one or more pointer port devices.

eventID 7000 (source: service control manager) - the Mouse Class Driver service failed to start due to the following error - the system cannot find the file specified.

if i try to start Mouclass manually, i get the following error -

Could not start the Mouse Class Driver service on *********

Error 0002: the system cannot find the file specified.

the MS TechNet only has entries for ID's 7026 and 7000, but both basically say to contact the system administrator, which isn't exactly much help. i did find info about ID 7 on eventid.net, though.. which says that this error is usually generated when the mouse is not connected during the boot process, which also isn't much help, because the mouse is connected just fine, and i've tried a bunch of different mice.

so here.. i've tried swapping out mice, i've tried reinstalling drivers, and i've tried replacing winnt\system32\drivers\mouclass.sys with a known good copy from a working machine. i still get the same errors.

i'm starting to think that the ps2 port on the motherboard is toast. any other ideas?
