thanks for the link :)

The file is a copy of the Windows 98 boot sector to allow XP to boot it. You can't just go ahead and edit a Windows Me one however it might work to use that one anyway as it probably just tells the PC to boot certain files.

However this file probably tells the system which partition the files it needs are on so it might not as it's inevitable their PC's config will be different.

You could try what craybox said or do the following:

You should find an entry in boot.ini saying "c:bootsect.dos=Microsoft Windows" or something. You can also recreate the file by extracting it from your Windows 98 partition using a DOS port of a Linux program called dd. Search for it on google and once you've downloaded it do this at a command prompt:

C:> dd if=/dev/hdxx of=c:bootsect.dos bs=512 count=1

Change the first 'x' to a, b, c or d, depending on whether your Windows 98 partition is on a hard drive Primary Master (a)/Primary Slave (b)/Secondary Master ©/Secondary Slave (d).

Change the second 'x' to a number 1-8 depending on which partition number your Windows 98 partition is on. If there's only one partition then then it will be '1'.

P.S. Give me your email address and I'll email it to you.
