I've searched the forum and haven't seen this issue addressed.

Is there any way to get Ctrl-Enter to auto-complete the "www." and ".com" part of an address, like in IE and Firefox? This is pretty much the only serious issue stopping me use Opera; I've searched Google and couldn't find any solution.

It seems ridiculous that this functionality isn't included by default. Other than that Opera 8 seems quite nice.

For me i just type the address without the 'www.' and '.com' and it happens automatically

Yes, I know it works but the address looks messy and it takes about 2 seconds while it decides what to do with it.

i made a thread about this :-D search must suck, i guess it's time neowin added some google support !

Well Google has neowin support..

'Whatever You Want To search for Site:Neowin.net'

Will return all results for the query @ neowin in google ;)

Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Server Name Completion > Look for local network machine (uncheck this)

Result of doing this is instantaneous results (no delay).

As one has already said, there is no need to hit Ctrl-Enter, either.

I've done that and it has improved it, though I still feel it a shame that a feature used by so many by instinct in both IE and Firefox is missing from Opera (it just looks untidy with out the "www." and ".com") - the browser has certainly improved recently, I just wish that Ctrl-Enter would be an option (heck, it's not as if it is assigned to do anything else). Also, you can't use Ctrl-Shift-Enter for adding ".org" either. :(

It's just a real niggle in an otherwise decent browser.

Ctrl+Enter is actually used for something else in Opera... the Wand.

An alternative option for you is to use Nicknames. Bookmark the page that you want to go to and then edit the Nickname under the properties for that Bookmark. Then, simply type in the nickname and Opera will automatically redirect you to the bookmarked site.

Hope this helps.

And even better, try Shift-F2 sometime ... it's wonderful ... TurboCharged Bookmark! http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=451

If you have more than 1 bookmark with a nickname beginning with the same letter, after pressing Shift-F2, start typing the bookmark's nickname ... as soon as you have typed in a unique character set for the whole of all your bookmarks, that particular bookmark item will instantly open.

You can even nickname bookmark folders!

All items in that bookmark folder will open instantaneously then. :)

Exactly what is the problem? Is it too easy to just hit "Enter"? I'm sure you can make a custom hotkey ctrl+shift+alt+j+t+s+enter if you find that better.

Untidy without www. and .com? Isn't that what you want? Enter the domain without www. .com? When you hit enter it's added automaticly.

I don't understand this

Whats problem? Opera is the most customizable browser. Enter key reserved for address bar but you can configure another keyboard shortcuts.

For example:

F1 - auto-complete typed address with ".com" and go to page

F2 - auto-complete typed address with ".net" and go to page

F3 - auto-complete typed address with ".org" and go to page

etc.

This is very useful solution for manual auto-complete and more better than Ctrl+Shift+Enter

1. Just go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Shortcuts -> Keyboard setup, click edit

2. Then open Advanced -> Edit Widget section section

and add these new actions:

Shortcut | Action

F1 Insert, ".com" & Go

F2 Insert, ".net" & Go

F3 Insert, ".org" & Go

Update. If you want auto-complete domain with "www." before you can use these keyboard shortcuts:

Shortcut | Action

ALT + F1 Insert, ".com" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go

ALT + F2 Insert, ".net" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go

ALT + F3 Insert, ".org" & Go to line start & Insert, "www." & Go

Now you can auto-complete address with "com","net","org" by pressing F1,F2,F3 and with "www." before if you pressing Alt+F1,F2,F3.

These hotkeys will work only if cursor will be placed in address bar / textedit area.

And even better, try Shift-F2 sometime ... it's wonderful ... TurboCharged Bookmark! http://www.opera.com/support/search/supsearch.dml?index=451

Yeah. it's very useful also but it works with bookmarks only.

Woho! Now I just have too remap them to ctrl+enter, shift+enter and ctrl+shift+enter respectively, the final thing that bugs me about opera will be solved. Thanks, made my night =D

Sorry for the double-post, but Neowin wigged out and now it won't let me edit. =/

Bah, it would have made my night, but it won't let me use ctrl+Enter, shift+Enter and ctrl+shift+Enter. =/

Which sucks, because now that I've started thinking about this again, ut's bugging me. And if I know myself I'll be back with Firefox in a few days. And the only reason is that Opera, dispite the amount of requests I've seen for this tiny functionality to be available, still insist that their crappy search-function is much better. No, it isn't. Because it doesn't work. Sure, it works for .com. But what if I want to go to www.neowin.net for the first time? It won't work, since someone has registered www.neowin.com I will end up there. And get annoyed and have to retype it. Or I could've just hit shift+enter and been taken to the correct address in less time than I got to the wrong one.(Less since the search takes a little bit of time. Not a lot, but it still takes time.)

Ah, sorry for the rant. It's just that this has been the onlyreason for me to stay away from Opera for about 2 years. And it annoys the hell out of me that it can't be done, since they claim to be oh so customizable...

Edit: Just like to add. This is a kind of attitude from Opera that annoys me to no end. Just because someone else thought of it first doesn't mean it isn't a great idea/function!

Just bookmark www.neowin.net and nickname it neowin.

Thats what I do, I have changed f1 to open a new page and goto nickname then all I have to do is start typing neowin and by the time I have typed ne opera has taken me to the page.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
