quicktime 7 HD on powerbook

I found this on Apple.com

Recommended Hardware Configurations for H.264 High Definition (HD) Playback

To play high definition video, a large amount of data must be processed by your computer. A powerful system will deliver the best playback experience.

For 1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

    * 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer

    * At least 256 MB of RAM

    * 64 MB or greater video card

For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

    * Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer

    * At least 512 MB of RAM

    * 128 MB or greater video card

I'll test your file out to see how it fares on my machine... but it seems that G4 people are left in the dark for H.264 HD content in QuickTime 7. :(

Edit: I just watched the BBC one... boy, does this suck or what!? I had tried playing HDV content through VLC before and had the same results, so I'm not surprised at all. Too bad, I love HD!

This is worrying, I really want a powerbook, but it seem's they are just not good enough to handle many thing's. I mean come on, VIDEO.

10.3.9 + QT7 = 12FPS at normal size.

I love this guy's "I mean come on, VIDEO" comment... as apparently the only type of video anyone will ever use again will be HD  By the time HD hits mainstream, I have no doubt every computer Apple makes will have at least 1 G5 core in it.

where did u get "normal" contents in H264? I think trailers on apple.com are still in H.263 or other formats, no?

Well no, on the quicktime page, you'll have a link in the top-right corner to HD videos. There you'll find some trailers in H264 codec, "normal" (1228x544) and for some of them even the 1080i version.....

The 720p trailers (1280x720) run fine on my PowerBook. There are a few dropped frames according to QuickTime but I didn't really notice them. The "Batman Begins" trailer in 720p is awesome. :D

I highly doubt it will run 1080i at more than 5fps though. Besides, why would I want to run 1920x1080 pixels of video on a 1280x854 screen?

My 12" PowerBook does 720p H.264 video quite well. It's the 1080p version that my PowerBook completely crawls on. This doesn't mean H.264 is useless on PowerBooks. It just means HD video encoded in H.264 above 720p doesn't fare too well.

What I meant was all content on www.apple.com/trailer is still in h.263 format except those hd trailers are in h.264 format

    • Deal for those who want 1900 size electronics in their house? with 2026/7 hardware mhm.. not nice
    • Cheap labour, the same as the U.K. China pays their people pittance.
    • Those people that come over here on boats are already in a safe country, if they want to come over here then do so correctly though the right channels. I was born in the U.K, my family that came over here came so via the proper means. My partner came here via the correct channels, she also became a British citizen, she knows more about this country than most of them that was born here, including myself, she worked hard to do what she does. She will stick up for this country and have done a few times, when people from her own part of world have put the U.K down. We are not going to agree, all I said to start with is that maybe Trump has the right idea with this America first thing and maybe we should start doing the same. Maybe not as drastic as what he is doing, but we do need to sort this country out, we need to sort out tech instead of relying on the U.S and others. Again you have not shown why you are so annoyed that we have left the E.U and this is what it is all about? If you don't live in the U.K and live in the E.U are you annoyed that we left your little club? If you live in the U.K and is pro-E.U, then fair enough then I can see how it annoys you. Are you one of these people who lives in the U.K and have a holiday chalet in the E.U and can now only stay there for so long? If so, then that is bad luck. As I have posted before, I have no problem with people coming here to work, as long as they do if via the proper channels. We are out of the E.U, people voted out, and maybe if more people had voted instead of sitting on their backsides the results would have been different. But they like the E.U and our government thought no we would not vote to leave. How wrong they were, surprised me. I expected to wake up in the morning and hear on the radio that we voted to stay. As I said, we are out and have been for 10 years, we are not going to go back in anytime soon if we ever do, so we all need to make the best of how things are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a tech site.
    • Tim Cook: "The US over time began to stop having as many vocational kinds of skills." What's the point of wasting time getting those skills if you can't get a job with them? Good Lord, maybe he and his cohort of CEO's who exported all these jobs to China should just shut the f**k up :D
