AE86s are great basic cars. they come with a good amount of power and balance and with minor modifications it handles fantastically. Im not personally fond of the body style but I have respect for what it can do. Its not the most powerful car but for its time it was great. a mid 90s 240sx can beat it easily in speed but they are about par when it comes to handling. as far as bang for your buck, the 86 is pretty good.

But honestly, you have no idea until you drive one. If you drive one and still think its crap, then well talk.

I agree this car is not all tha great looking cause whos ever it is didnt take care of it, but one you drive it and realise its potential you could fall in love with it. The drift king Tsuchi (not sure how to spell) really loves it, granted i fist saw it in Initial D the arcade and thought it was awesome, when i drove one in real livfe, i realised it was awesome.

yanman, how can you hate this car BECAUSE of inital d? Initial D's one of the greatest anime's ever, and the 4th season's making the show even better

LOL Man, you gotta read my post again, I don't hate this car, I like it, but the fact that I like it isn't because of Initial D, I am one of the few who don't like Initial D. Did that make more sense? LOL

don't really see how anybody could not like initial d, except maybe the fact you know takumi's gonna win 99% of his races. I like how his dad just bought an impreza and forces takumi to drive it half the time and how takumi realises it's far better than what he's getting out of the ae86

Dude my expectations for this topic were very high.. then I entered and all I saw was a car that looked distinctively like the tin man from Wizard Of Oz.

Ugly!

Personal view, I could of kept this to myself but I felt that I needed to post because you forced me with your Back To The Future impersonation.

Doh...Even worse, then.

Its a cult car, and is waaay more capable than it lets on. Think what kinds of machines other countries were producing when this car came out. Take America for example.. big, heavy, tail happy V8's.. this little AE86 would eat cars like that for breakfast on the track. I watched a 'Best Motoring' video with a sorted AE86 wasting a sorted R34 Skyline down a winding back road type circuit! All that technology and probably double the power in the Skyline and it got blitzed.. thats why the AE86 is a great car.

Quite frankly i'm glad that not everyone likes it.. people who don't know cars tend to just completely miss the truely great stuff. Case in point.

I wouldn't assume my knowledge of vehicles because I've never heard of a 'cult' vehicle. It basically makes you look bad. I simply asked for some history behind this thing.

America made crappy cars. That's not front page news. I just find it funny that people are fawning over this (in my purely honest opinion) really really ugly car. You may have the handling of a ferarri, but people still poke fun at you from the sidewalks. :)

There are heaps of them around here. I'm not sure what engine comes stock in it, but almost every one I have seen has a 4AGZE (supercharged MR2 engine), with the supercharger taken out and a turbo bolted straight in. They are not considered fast, although they are very light. A guy around here put a moderatly modified RB25 into his Sprinter, it ran a 10.02 on street tyres.

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
    • you can also do this with this tool: PowerSettingsExplorer made by mbk1969 at 3dguru forum.. I found it by accident researching on modern standby and annoying quirks of it in 2022
