I'm going to be ordering one in the near future as well, I'd be intersted in your opinions on the mini. I also like you am a long time (9 years) PC user and am slowly being enticed by the Mac mini.

Mac Mini 1.42GHZ Model

512 MB Ram

SuperDrive (CD,CDR,CDRW,DVD,DVD-R,DVD+R,DVD-RW,DVD+RW)

80GB HD

Ethernet, Modem, Sound the already build in's!

It totaled out to be $763.00 with fast shipping!!

I am really excited. I really wanted to get internal Bluetooth, and the Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, but at the time it was 200. Know it's only 150.

I will let you know about my experience.

for me its not. ive been pc user for ages. my last workstation was/is p4 2.26ghz 1gb ram intel reference board... but thats just a total personal feelin! ive got the 1.4ghz mini with 512mb. for example iphoto doesnt respond so fast, maybe I imported to many files. I just tried watchin hd quicktime trailer. a bit choppy too. I guess im just not used to see apps laggin a bit.

but dont get me wrong. I love this quiet beauty under my desk. perhaps ill switch later to a powermac :laugh:

you'll see a huge difference between the mac mini and a powermac :)

i thought my mac mini was about as fast as my p4 2.6

heh, I think ill work on my mini for a month then visit an apple store and try out powermac dual 2.0ghz for an hour. its gonna be interesting :happy:

I've been a Mac user for a while and I bought the mini in January. I have only two problems with it. One is the speed of the HD, it really makes the system seem slower than it should. This really shows on Spotlight searches (it is still very fast but compared to an iMac or a PowerMac you can tell the difference) and in iPhoto when browsing lots of pictures. The other problem I have with it is the video card, it doesn't handle high res monitors very well and doesn't support Quartz 2D Extreme. I don't really care about the ripple effect in Dashboard buut when Apple chooses to enable it Quartz 2D Extreme will boost GUI performace a lot and it won't be availible on the Mini because of its gfx card.

With that said I love my mini, it is a great machine, I use it daily for everything. Just remember it isn't going to be the fastest machine out there.

Make sure you check macupdate and versiontracker.com for any software you might need and dashboardwidgets.com for extra widgets.

I'm just amazed at the GUI interface, the animations, ect.

I have a cupple of questions tho.

1.) Is there a way to enable sounds, to where when you minimize, move, or do other things in OS, it will make little sounds?

2.) What about like Spider Solitare? I love hat game in Windows, is there a good one in the MAC OS.

the slow startup is because of the slow HD in the mac mini, its pretty fast on my powermac :)

Well, when you consider that you don't have to reboot the Mac but maybe once a month (when a new system update comes out that requires it), what's the big deal about boot times? They are essentially meaningless.

just put it to sleep, thats what I do with my iMac...there is no need to shut it off, I have not restarted my Mac since I installed Tiger.

i had my mini up 74 days before i did a restart .. installed all the latest security patches ... other than that there is no need to restart or shutdown

How much electricity would it use in sleep mode?

Is there a chance of it just bursting into flames or somthing?
