G4 and H.264 not friends?

I heard that H.264 in Quicktime 7 doesn't work if the Mac uses a G4 chip. Is this true? Does the G4 have any effect on the H.264 at all?

i use a mac mini and i can play h264 stuff fine. in fact i just made an imovie in h264 but my pc can't play it since there's no quicktime 7 for it.

but the HD stuff isn't great on G4. i tried a 1080i trailer and it was choppy. 720p is quite smooth

What do you mean by 'doesn't work'? Playback? It is a bit choppy for my G4 1.5GHz PowerBook, but only with the massive HD QuickTime galleries. I don't use H.264 but I don't think the G4 makes a difference (it does if you're comparing G4/G5 playback?) but not if you want to simply playback a file?

I have no idea... but my answer is, no I don't think that is true.

I mean if I played a H.264 video on a Mac Mini (G4 processor) and then played the same file on an iMac G5, would the video play better on the iMac because of the G5?

I think it depends on the CPU and graphics card. So yes, it would make a difference (smoothness). That's my opinion.

To settle this...

H.264 WORKS ON A G4.

The High Definition content that Apple posted on their HD gallery works, but is choppy on a G4. For best results, Apple recommends a G5.

Any regular H.264 content will work on a G4.

Indeed, the mere fact that it's a G5 processor has nothing to do with it, the point is that the G5 systems are more powerful.
