PS3 priced at $465?

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.

Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.

Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.

I remember i bought xbox when it was released and it was something around 450? and xbox had to give the people who had bought it 2 games and a free controler after a month or something..

465 is around what I expected. We pay that much just for a gfx card for our computers so I don't see what's so expensive about it.

Hardcore PC users buy stupidly expensive graphics cards, the main "core audience" of pc users just buy what comes with a PC which is usually mid to bottom end like Radeon 9550 or GeForce FX5200. I wouldnt pay $465 for the PS3, and i wont pay it for the x360 if its a stupid price, ill wait for the prices to drop.

A major investement/financial firm (I believe it was GS) projected that the Xbox360 would sell for around $300, if PS3 can't match that price they will definitely lose a lot of ground as most casual gamers will probably go for the cheaper of the two systems, that is if they arn't attracted by the Nintendo Revolution! :p

Your right, it isn't expensive at all for this. IF this is what it'll cost.

I don't think Xbox 360 will be much cheaper. I'm estimating at lowest $399US but I doubt that. Think about it, PS2 and Xbox were around that at launch, right? Well it won't be any cheaper than the originals @ launch.

If you want one but think it's too expensive, just put aside $10 a week. Say it comes out next spring 1 year from now, 52 weeks x $10 = $520, not really so expensive when you think about that way.

Wait till the PS2 reaches 250 on ebay and spend the other 150 or other stuff. Like games ;P

PS3 will retail for $400 usd, just like the PS2 did. X360 will retail for around $350-$400 usd.

If you guys think that is too much I think you need to take a look at what you are paying for you're computers, you're HDTVs or your LCD monitors.

all indications from research companies was xbox 360 = 249-299. Have not heard any other price.

first rumor of ps3 is 465, that's a lot but it's just the first rumor...but with the cell in it and blueray dvd drives...it will get mighty expensive
